The Bergh Family Records

Augustus Berg

Some records have been inserted in an old Bank of England Pass Book belonging to Augustus Bergh, Senior, opened July 15th 1828. Capt. John Henry Mills evidently did this and also his Mother Sarah Mills. F.R.B.

The following are Extracts or copies of entries:-



"1882 I, Frederic Mills' Mother am sorry to state there has been no account whatever of him since he left Mannilla for Hong Kong (China) in September 1874 therefore consider he cannot be alive. S. Mills".


"Augustus Edward Mitcalf (son of my Aunt Ann & R. Mitcalf Master Mariner) d. on 25 Decr. 1898 at his house in Preston 14 Fishergate Hill. I was with him also my Sister Augusta when he died, both his wife (my Sister Sarah) are buried in the same grave in Preston Cem. (he leaves one son Augustus Fredric Mitcalf) who I trust may live long and follow his Father's honourable and moral teachings. "He was only 57 years of age when he died after a hard and toiling life at Sea and on the Shore". John H.Mills 1899".


John Mills, son of John Mills of Shields, nr Newcastle-on-Tyne was born Augt. 15th 1797 married on the 7th July 1830 at Bow London Sarah Berg daughter of Augustus Berg.


Your great grandfather John Mills of Shields was descended from a Scots family (Clergyman). I have heard that their original name was Milne but his parents dying he went to sea very young to make his own way in life - his wife was from a respectable tradesman family of the name of Clark. Sarah Mills.
