Augustus Bergh

1778-1864

NOTE: The following taken from the Original at the same time and place as in the case of his Father. F.R.B.

I, Augustus Bergh (as stated before) was born in London in the neighbourhood of Soho on the 16th October 1778 about half past two in the afternoon.

In the year 1800 on the 16th of June I was married for the first time at Boston County of Lincoln to Mifs Sarah Sibsey of the same place who was born on the 12th of September 1779 at 6 o'c morning.

My good wife bore me the following children namely all at Boston:-

After this last birth my dear wife her health began gradually to decline, the last 2 years of her life were the most lingering and painful but which she bore with the greatest patience and resignation, a severe liver complaint, and finally a dropsy & terminated her existence on the 14th March 1827 at midnight in the 48th year of her age.

No trouble and expense was spared to save her life or prolong her existence but alas in vain. She died in my arms without a groan surrounded by her children. She was buried on 24th March in the burial ground of St. Dunstan Stepney. Her tombstone * with two lines memorialise her simply but truly

"In life amiable and beloved
Her death an irreparable loss".

* More than one search in the burial ground has failed to discover the grave but the ground has for years been laid out as a public resort. (F.R.B. 1910)

I saw the original entry of his marriage at Boston Parish Church 11 Nov. 1910. See photograph showing the signatures. There is no record in the Burial Register of the burial of the daughter Elizabeth in 1819 but my grandfather Frederick was baptised there 1811. Probably Elizabeth is buried at St. Dunstan's Stepney and their Father will have removed from Boston to Stepney between June 1811 and August 1819. (F.R.B.)

The burial ground round Boston Parish Church had long ago been "improved" and the few stones laid flat, hence there is no trace of any "Sibsey" grave. F.R.B.

As his daughter Sarah was married at Bow Church in 1830 he was probably then still living in Stepney or near by but a search in a great many Directories has not disclosed the address.

In 1840 he was already at Brighton, his two sons probably living with him at London Road. He left Clapham to go to Brighton. F.R.B.
