[1 to 3] January

1 Monday

Highgate. I got up about ½ past 8, had a game with the little Jones and then began to make a little room in the drawing room for a dance to-day. Horace came and helped. Soon after lunch I went down the hill with Mamma to bring back a tongue and a few other things. Aunt Ida's & family to John Jeakes (all except Edith) Ted Nettlefold, Charley & David Waterlow, Mary King & Emily Stones made our party, we danced till 11:30 & then played at Shellout 1.30

2 Tuesday

Highgate. I got up at about the same time. Mamma & left soon after breakfast to go to Mrs Jones burial. I packed up a little & stuck my map of Paris on some canvass that I bought. In the afternoon I walked with Maggie to Hampstead and visited the Elles' & Jacksons'. We met Dan & Fanny & Mamma at the top of the park. I went into Aunt Ida's & then to Jeakes where we dined. 9. Mamma & Papa came later. We played at Shellout, lost1/6. It is 12.-

3 Wednesday

Passy Paris. We had breakfast as usual. I left Highgate in a fly with Mamma & Maggie at about 9.40 leaving Charing Cross at 10.45, Daily News. Gave a man 4d. on board. We had rather a rough voyage but was not ill. I lunched at Boulogne where we waited about 20 minutes. We stayed 15 minutes at Amiens where I had some coffee. We arrived at Paris as near as possible at the right time 8.15. Had to wait as usual in those horrid Salle d'attentes, & had to open one portmanteau. I then took a cab and came here without much difficulty although the cabman did not know the way. I have unpacked and put away my things. It is 10.15.

4 Thursday

Passy, Paris. I got up at 7 o'clock and went by the 7.33 train to Paris. I met the 3 young Mathias' in the train. I was the first at the office. They are all very well there. I had to go to the Mairie's about getting a signature legalised & afterwards I went out again. It rained nearly all day. I lunched at Duvals. I changed the £5.10.- I had in English money. I do not feel quite up to the mark today. I think it is being tired so I am going tobed. It is 8.20

5 Friday

Passy Paris. I got up at the same time and went by the same train as yesterday but was only just in time to catch it. I was the first in the office. I did not go out at all this morning except to Lunch which I had in the same Duvals as yesterday. After lunch I went to the Mairie to fetch what I left yesterday & then went to the Douane. Nearly all the fellows have come back here today, and so it is a little more lively than yesterday. It is now about 9.10

6 Saturday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the same train. I went on making an index to a book for M Amy, and at 10 I was at the Douane and had to get a "bon de sortie" for a case of goods that were returned from Switzerland, it took me about 1½ hours, I then went to Duvals where I lunched, after lunch I continued what I had begun this morning. I dined here as usual, after which I came up into my room & wrote a letter home. It is 9.30

7 Sunday

Passy. Breakfasted out. Went to church, posted letter, came back after having lunch at Duvals. Went at about 4.30 to Auteuil. It is 10.10

8 Monday

Passy Paris. I went by the same train, & met the young members of the Mathias family as usual, who were rather ruder than usual. I did not go out for B&A at all except to go to the bankers. I lunched at Blonds & bought 10 cahets. I had nothing particular to do, I translated some letters and a paragraph from the New York Herald of which I did not understand several pieces myself. After dinner I bought some Essence minerale & some candles. It is 10.30

9 Tuesday

Passy Paris. Somehow or other although I had set my alarum I did not wake up till about 20 minutes to 8. So I was obliged to take the 8 o'clock train. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I went twice to our couriers, but that was all I was out. I came back here by my usual train. A little while after dinner I went to Mme Bonet, where I passed a very pleasant soirée, & they have given me every hope of finding a family where I can board. It is 12.5

10 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I was up in good time this morning and got to the office first as usual, when M Levroi came he was very much out of temper and I had rather a row with him, but I do not care although M Amy came in & heard it as he knows that I am not the only one who had rows with him. I lunched at Blonds. I was out 2 or 3 times for the house. I came back by the 6.15 train, after dinner I chatted with Velon and then wrote to Grandmamma to her birthday tomorrow, I posted it and then came up here & finished reading up the Feuilletons of the Petit Journal. It is 10.20

11 Thursday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 7.33 train & met as usual Antoine Mathias who had got another piece to read to see whether it would do to act at his fathers house. I was as usual the first at the office. I went on with my index. I lunched at Blonds alone. M Amy sent me out this afternoon, & later he gave me an american Newspaper, out of which I am to translate 1½ columns. I went to Sinnetts, they were out so I dined at the Palais Royal. It is 10.5

12 Friday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris as usual & met Antoine Mathias who gave me a piece to read, which I read I think it will do it certainly might be better. Before lunch I went to M Wisotzky to ask him to take Papa's dress boots which I had taken in mistake. I lunched at Blonds. All day I continued translating the article above mentioned, it is on American watch making. After dinner which I had as usual here we played at "Vingt-et-un" I won 50c. It is 9.45

13 Saturday

Passy Paris. I was just in time to see the 7.33, my usual train go out of the station, I was, however, first at the office. I finished my translation & also the index I had been making, & then began to docket last month's letters. I came back here by my usual train, the 6.30 one, after dinner we danced a little among ourselves, then played cards, I won again & then all of [a] sudden we heard there was a fire and started off at once. It was at St Ouen so we came back without seeing it. 9.35

14 Sunday

Passy. Breakfasted out. Stamps. Lunched here. Went to chapel. Mince pie. Walked about in Paris came back, had a "times" from home. Wrote to father. Dined here. 10.15

[15 to 17] January

15 Monday

Passy Paris. I missed my usual train again although a cock that is opposite woke me up very early; I went to Paris as usual but was not first, I was indoors nearly all day. Whilst I was at lunch Uncle Sidney called in Mrs Roberts carriage & left his card telling me to go to Mrs Roberts to dinner. Consequently I left 46 Rue de l'Echiquier at 4 came here put on dress clothes & went. Uncle, Charley & Hilda & 3 other people were there; I took Hilda to school & came back before 10. It is 10.50

16 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I was up in time today to go by my usual train I also met Antoine Mathias and was first at the office. I verified the two banking accounts & docketted some invoics but did not go out all day, except to lunch & afterwards I took my watch to be regulated. M Rizzoli changed something in it and now it goes ever so much too slow. This evening we had a short game of cards & I then went to Mme Bonet. Miss Koch has got me the addresses of some families I hardly think they are the thing. It is 11.55

17 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I was again too late today and was obliged to go by the 8.3 train & was consequently not first at the office. I was indoors all day excepting whilst I was at dejeuner, and the I went to the Rue aux Ours once for B&A all the rest of the day I was docketting invoices. I wrote to one of the addresses Miss Roch gave me yesterday to ask whether I could see the ladies at 8 tomorrow. After dinner we again played at cards and I lost again; they had altered some of the rules without telling me. I had a lesson that is to say a dictation this evening by M Guèrin. It is 10.15

[18 to 21] January

18 Thursday

Passy Paris. Price the new English fellow who sleeps next to me woke me up at 6.30 but I went to sleep again till nearly 7.30 and was therefore obliged to take the 7.48 train, I was however first at the office. All the morning I docketted invoices but have now finished. I sent a paper to mamma. After lunch (I bouht 10 cahets) I went out to find a map of New York for M Amy but in vain. I called on Sinneth. I got an answer from the ladies I wrote to yesterday asking me to come on Sunday. After dinner I just had a short game of cards. I lost 60c in all 2.50 & will not play again here. It is 10.50

19 Friday

Passy Paris. I was up in good time today & did not miss my train as yesterday & was first at the office. I put away letters & Invoices this morning, & arranged the boxes for some. I lunched as usual. At about 1.30 I went out & went to the 13d St Germain for B&A. I went to Mme Rowiere the lady I wrote to on Wednesday. I like it pretty well, the room is rather gloomy. I wrote home asking what I had better do. After dinner Price & I made one of the fellows an Apple-pie-bed & then chatted. M Amy left for New York tonight. I am rather tired. It is 10.25

20 Saturday

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train and was first at the office; at about 10 o'clock M Bertram called Nicolas the Garçon and gave him notice to leave (after 16 years in their service) & he told me that as business was so bad etc etc he could not employ me any longer. I lunched at Blonds. After which I called on Jordan whem I saw. I wrote to Father, Mme Rouvière & Hilda, & went to Hardings in the afternoon. I came back by the 6.15 train, gave M Nioussel congé & had a lesson. I then translated a letter for Price, who broke my window in a scuffle. It is 10.10 o'clock

21 Sunday

Passy. I breakfasted out, went to English Chapel, came back wrote home, walked about in the Bois & went to Auteuil. It is 9.30

22 Monday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my usual train and was first at the office. M Bertrand was just going to send me to Havre to take a packet when he found out that if he sent it straight to Liverpool it would arrive in time. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I wrote to Dora but have not posted my letter yet. This evening after dinner I had a lesson again and then I mended MaryAnne Jeakes' glove and did one or two odds & ends. It is now about 10.15

23 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris as usual and met Antoine Mathias in the train, I was as usual first at the office. Posted 2 letters of yesterday. I paid what I owed B&A for my Christmas presents for Mary Harding & Julie Mathias. I ordered some counters as Papa had told me to get some when at home. To my great astonishment I have not received a letter from home. It has been very cold all day. I came back by the 6.30 train, after dinner I translated some sentences out of the Grammar & then wrote a french letter to Miss Koch. It is 10.-

24 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris as usual and was first at the office. I had a letter from Mama & from Papa, who say they wish me to stay in Paris another 6 or 9 months so I am to do my best to find a place; I told M Bertrand, M Bruzeau, Paul Harding, Jordan, Mathias & M Brussel & wrote to Sinnett & Miss Koch to whom I id not send my yesterday's letter.Stamps. This afternoon M Betrand told me a M Guy a leather merchant in the Rue des Petites Iunies would take me on the same conditions as I am at A&B. So I wrote to Mamma stating facts I am to go and see M Guy tomorrow. After dinner I went to Jordans where I passed a vvery pleasant evening with him & his wife. It is 10.30

25 Thursday

Passy Paris. I met Antoine Mathias in my usual train and he seemed to think that M Brussel's having told me to write was a sign that he might take me. So I wrote to him. This afternoon I went with M Bruzeau to M Guy who will take me if Father will give him his orders in Paris. So I wrote home saying so. [Stamps 2.50] After dinner Miguel Lagos & I took the train & went to Paris (St Lazare) & walked to the new Skating Rink in the Rue Blanche. M Bruzeau gave me a ticket for two. It is very nice & large but of a bad shape. It is 12.45

26 Friday

Passy Paris. I arrived as usual first at the office, Papa sent me five letters of introduction from Spies Bros & Co of London. I have to delivered any yet but mean to tomorrow. I called at Hardings this afternoon, Mr H has invited me to dinner on Sunday he says Mary has not been well. I have heard of no place today. I acme back here by my usual train & after a very poor dinner I chatted with Price. I have not yet had an answer to my letter to Hilda of the 20 Inst. It is 10.5

27 Saturday

Passy Paris. I was again first at the office, I had several things to do, but at about ¼ to 11 I went to Courtois & Fèrre to whom I had a letter of recommendation they had nothing for me. I lunched as usual after which I went back made a "debit" etc I then went to Oeschger Mesdach & Co to whom I had a letter of recommendation. They did not want of any. I then went to M Brussel who had not received my letter of Thursday so I am to write again, but he has nothing but will give me some introduction. I had a letter from home in answer to mine of the 24 but not mentioning mine of 25. Had a lesson. It is 10.20

28 Sunday

Passy. I breakfasted out. Did not go to church. Went to Paris & then to Hardings, where it was rather slow on the whole today. It is 11.-

29 Monday

Passy Paris. I went by my usual train into Paris & met Antoine Mathias who says he still thinks that M Brüssel will give me a place but he wants to see my hand writing first; so the first thing I did was to write to him again. I lunched as usual & then went to Berthon frères who knew of no vacancy. I also went to Billaut & Billaudat but neither were there & I must go again in the morning, I wrote a post card home. After dinner we were humbugging downstairs and M Nioussel (known as Noudles) got cross. Had a lesson. It is 10.15

30 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by mu usual train and was first at the office. I had a letter rom Mamma who says as I expected that Papa could not agree to M Guy's terms. So I went to tell him so. I also went to Billaud & Billaudot but the patron was not there again. This afternoon I told Jordan that I should not accept Guy's conditions and he said he would speak to some people about me; I did not go to Mme Bonet as I intended. I changed £2.60 for 2/6. It is 10.10

31 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris as usual and was first at the office, soon after the others came I went to Billaud & Billaudot, but they do not want anyone. I went to M Brüssel who gave me a recommendation to a house in the Rue d'Aboukir but they do not want anyone. I had a letter from home. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I went to Auby-Lapied's and fetched the counters I had ordered & paid B&A for them. When M Bertrand paid me he said he would keep me another week or so as I had not found anything. I wrote home on a post-card. After dinner I had my hair cut & M Nioussel said I made much too much noise in my room. It is 10.10

1 Thursday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the same train as usual and met Antoine Mathias in it. I went straight to the Hotel Bergère to fetch Hutton's buyers, but I was told there was noone of the name there; I went back again in ½ an hour & found them. I went about with Miss Murray to buy wool work au Passé, chiefly. We got a good deal; I went and dined in a Duval & took tea with M Headington and afterwards I went with them to the Cirque Américain where we saw a very good representation. About 1 o'clock

2 Friday

Passy Paris. I went as usual to Paris at about 10 Hutton's 2 buyers came we looked out some things in the warehouse and I then started off with Miss Murray again, M Headington went eith M Bruzeau, we got the same things as yesterday only at different manufacturers. I dined and they took tea at the "Café Français" and then we went to the Opera & saw the Hugenots. At ½ past 3 I was at Bonets as appointed he is going to see if he can find me a situation. I did not get back till late. About 12.45

3 Saturday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris in my usual train and was not first at the office M Bertrand was first, yesterday also. We saw some needle work in the magasin & then went out again & got some more we also went to a manufacturer of Articles de fantaine. I lunched with them at the café français and went with both out till nearly 5. we then went to the warehouse, they soon said goodbye & M Bruzeau & I began writing out the orders & copying them. We dined at a Duval & then went back at the warehouse where I stayed till 9.45. M B was still there when I left. It is 11.15

4 Sunday

Passy. I got up late, had a letter to tell me Clara has a daughter, went to Chapel. Wrote home. Went for a walk. Dined with Lagos. 8.45

5 Monday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 8.3 train and was not the first today but considering I had been up late for 3 nights for B&A that did not matter. M Bertrand gave me a letter to translate as well as an aricle out of "th Truth" on Russia. This afternoon I went to M A Mignon who was not at home, I took some note of commission & then went to M Bideau, but he had not heard of anything. I bought a copybook & came back as usual & found an invitation for Wednesday from Sinnett. It is 10

6 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my usual train and was first at the office. At about 9 I went to M A Mignon who received me very friendly and will do his best to find me a place. I finished the article on Russia that I had begun to translate yesterday, I called on M Persoz but did not see him. I brought my boots back which had been repaired. After dinner I went to Mme Bonet where I met M Persoz, who will also do his best, and several other people I had already seen there. It is 11.40

7 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 7.48 train but was first at the office soon after the others had come I went & called on M Lutheroth whom I did not find at home so I let word I would go again at 7.30 tomorrow. I wrote home today; This evening I went and dined at Sinnetts there was another, old, gentleman there, After dinner we went to the new Rink where there was a fête given by the Rolling Club of which both Sinnetts are members 4 medals were ditributed Henry was on the Jury. I gave 1.- to one of the garçons as he had got a manufacturers to giv me a little thing in Petit Bronze. It is 1.-

8 Thursday

Passy Paris. I took the 7.48 train again &amo; went straight to M Lutheroth who said he would do his best to find me something but I must not reckon on him as he sees very few people. I lunched as usual; M Bertrand sent me to a leather merchant to see some leather for Papa; I then wrote to W.H.&S and enclosed a letter for Papa. It has been very nasty weather all day. I had a letter from Papa with a £5 note. I bought some Essence & matches & had a lesson. 10.15

9 Friday

Passy Paris. I went by the 7.33 my usual & train & met Antoine Mathias, I was first at the office; I had this morning a very long letter to translate which took me a good long while. This afternoon I went to Leaires and bought an Opera glass for Maggie's 21st birthday it is ivory and cost 34 frs nett. I think & hope she will like it. I shall send it by Hutton & Co tomorrow. I did not have much to do this afternoon. After dinner this evvening I took a bath. It is 9.45

10 Saturday

Passy Paris. I just missed my usual train and was obliged to take the 7.48 one, however I was first at the office. M Bertrand sent me out directly he arrived; & I did not get back till about 11. I received a letter from Papa with another letter of recommendation. This afternoon Paul Harding fetched me & took me to a house in the Rue d'Enghien but they only want to give 50 frs. I went to Wisotzky & Mignon both were out, I called on M Guy but he has not heard of anything. Enclosed opera glasses in C 219 for Hutton & Co G.V. Sinnett sent a petites affiches & advertisement. It is 9.

11 Sunday

Passy. I got up late. Lunched went to Chapel, came back, wrote home, walked in the Bois de Boulogne & I dined at M Bertrand's. It is 11.45

12 Monday

Passy Paris. I was just too late to catch the 7.33 train so I went by the next one; as it was wet all day I did not go to M Mignon or anyone else; I wrote on a postcard to Papa teling him that I had sent the letter I wrote on Friday to the same firm. I lunched as usual. At about 9 o'clock I took a cab and went to M Penavaire's to a ball. It was a very lively one and I amused myself very much, more than I expected, there

Half Holiday, 13 Shrove Tuesday

Passy. were 4 or 5 English people there but hardly any ladies that valsed. The polka was the dance that ws most successful. We danced till 5 o'clock this morning, I came back by cab & got to bed at 6.15. I slept very soundly and did not get up till about 2 o'clock, I then went and had some breakfast in a coffee, and went to the Skating Palais, Mrs Nioussel gave me a ticket on Sunday. I did not skate & did not stay long. I came back & read the Petit Journal. I dined as usual & am going to bed at 8.15

14 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I was in time this morning but as my chocolate was not ready I missed the 7.33 train again, however I was first at the office. M Bertrand went to the office yesterday afternoon I hear but not for long. This morning I took the advertisement Sinnet had advised me to insert to the Petites Affiches, It will appear in tomorrow's number. I lunched as usual I went to the gentleman Papa sent me a letter of recommendation to but he was not at home, After dinner I pinched my finger in a door and it hurts a good deal. I had a lesson today. It is 9.40

15 Thursday

Passy Paris. I just caught the 7.33 train but should not have if it had been ½ a minute later. I was first at the office but M Bertrand was not much later. I went out this morning and bought a "Petites Affiches" and found mu advertisement had been put in alright. I posted my letter to Simmett. Lunched as usual. The garçon has left B&A this evening, he has been getting in a mess with M Bruzeau. After dinner I wrote a letter to Maggie congratulating to her 21st birthday. It is 9.20

16 Friday

Passy Paris. I missed my usual train again today but was nevertheless first at the office where I found a letter from Maggie saying Clara was not at all well. I did not have much to do today. I was out a good deal. I went to M Harding in the afternoon but he has not yet heard of anything. I lunched as usual & bought 10 cachets. After dinner which I had as usual here I paid M Nioussel my bill up to the 23 of last month, & then came upstairs & altered my shelf. It is 10.10

17 Saturday

Passy Paris. I was just in time to catch the 7.33 train and was as usual first at the office. This morning I had nothing particular to do. I lunched at Blonds as usual & was out nearly all the afternoon "reclamant"; I went to M Brussel to thank him for the letter of recommendation that he had given me. I wrote a good long letter to Ralph, I came back by the 6.30, my usual train, & after dinner I had a lesson. It has been rather cooler out today but is very warm here on account of my fire. It is 10.

18 Sunday

Passy. I got up at about 7.30. Wrote home, went to church, walked in the Bois de Boulogne & went to Auteuil. It is 10.-

19 Monday

Passy Paris. I just missed my train but was nevertheless again the first at the office. I had two letters to translate this morning one of which was rather long & consequently took rather a long time. After lunch I went out to different manufacturers for B&A although it was raining hard. I wrote a note to Sinnett telling him the success of my advertisement. [Stamps 1.0] After dinner which I had as usual here I translated some exercises on the Article in French. It is 9.35

20 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I was in time to catch the 7.33 train but as the ticket place was shut I had to wait for the next. I fell down in the Rue Grange Batelière. I was a few minutes before M Bertrand at the office. I went to M A Mignon this morning he was out but I saw the other young man, who told me to go to a house in the Rue Ave St Augustin, I went but I do not think that will do. I also saw M Ernest Augerau to whom Papa sent me a letter from M Kahn. I am to return tomorrow. I hear Clara is better. I went this evening to Mme Bonet passed a pleasant evening & got an invitation to Mm Persoz. 11.45

21 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 8.3 train today, at 10 I went to M Ogerau who has given me a letter of introduction which I have not yet delivered. I went to the house in the Rue Ave St Augustin but they say they do not want anybody. I wrote a post card home & had a letter from Mamma saying Clara has been very very ill but is better, she also encloses a form for an advertisement. I gave M Bruzeau my card to leave at Mme Penavaire's. I came back by the 6.45 train. After dinner I came up here expecting to have a lesson at 8, the master came at about 8.40. I had a row with him, as he seems to think he can give the rules better than Delille's grammar & he does not understand at all how to give a rule. It is 10.-

[22 to 25] February

22 Thursday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 7.48 train & was first at the office, there was not very much to do, but I had to go out several times, I also delivered the letters M Ogerau gave me to a M Joffroy who told me to write, I saw M Legusy, M A Mignon's friend, he has not heard of anything yet. I dined at Mme Bonet' this evening & went with her & Miss Roch to Mme Persoz 12 Rue de l'Odéon, who has a soirée as Mme Bonet but every Thursday instead of Tuesday. I enjoyed myself very well 12.30

23 Friday

Passy Paris. Before leaving I got a post card from M Bonet who tells me to go & see a Gentleman I went this afternoon but he was out. I took this morning the 7.33 train & was first as usual. I went out again today but with the exception of an invoice I had nothing to do in the warehouse. H Harding advises me not to advertise. After dinner this evening we had a little hopp amongst ourselves. I got a card from Mama, & wrote a letter to M Joffroy but had no time to write to M Günther as it is 10.10

24 Saturday

Passy Paris. I missed the 7.48 train & was obliged to go by the 8.3 & was consequently last at the office, it is however the first time for a very long while. I was out a good part of the morning for B&A, in the afternoon I went to see M Van Batenburg, the gentleman M Bonet spoke of on his card, but I am to go on Monday again. I wrote a letter to Herr Günther. I did not have a lesson today & am going to leave off having them as I think in studying my grammar I shall learn more than with him. It is 9.40

25 Sunday

Passy Paris. I wrote to Mrs Reinecke, Mamma & M Bonet, went to church & came back & stayed here all day as it was wet. It is 9.35

26 Monday

Passy Paris. I was up in good time today & went by the 7.33 train & was first at the office, I had nothing to do this morning I lunched as usual at Blonds. After lunch I went out for B&A once or twice & then went to see M Van Batenburg, who told me to write a letter & to show him a certificate from B&A & he would then give me an answer tomorrow. I did one or two things in the office when I got back. After dinner I wrote a letter to M Van Batenburg & it is now nearly 9.40

27 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I was up in good time today but they gave me some bread that was nearly all crust and which took so long to eat that I just arrived at the station when the 7.33 train left. Passy Paris. I was in very good time today to catch my 7.33 train. I was first at the office. I had a rather difficult letter to translate from german it was an order for a pair of boots & there were a good many terms for which I did not know the french. I lunched at Blonds after which I went & fetched some samples of frames & took them to M Bertrand at his house. I had nearly nothing to do all the afternoon. I posted my letter to M Bonet & not having heard from home I posted the other letter I wrote yesterday. After having humbugged with the others I came and studied my french grammar. It is 10

Passy Paris. I was in good time for my usual train, the one I have missed so often letely, but was only a few minutes before M Levroi. I made an invoice this morning & this afternoon I went to two or three different places for B&A but on the whole there was but very little to do. I lunched as usual at Blonds, I bought 10 cachets & M Blond gave me 5 francs too much in return, so I had to go back to return it to him. I came back here by my usual train, M Nioussel who has been absent some days has not yet returned. It is 10.10

Passy Paris. I was in very good time for my usual train & was as usual first at the office, I had more to do today. I lunched as usual, & in the afternoon I went out to a good many manufacturers. It has been very nasty weather all day, it snowed nearly all the morning and then it turned into sleet. I came back here as usual by the 6.30 train & dined here as usual after which we had a little hop among ourselves & the went up to Velon's room for a little while. It is 9.45

Passy Paris. I was first at the office today having caught the 7.33 train. I did not go out all day except to have lunch & once at about 5 o'clock to somebody on the Boulevard close by. I made out some Invoices, one of which was very long & complicated. I came back to Passy by my usual train that is to say the 6.30 one. After dinner went up to Galecio's room for some time, shortly after we had left there Turner came & I went down stairs & talked to him. It is now about 10 o'clock.

Passy Paris. Although I went by the 7.33 my usual train I was not at the office as soon as M Bertrand who must have got there soon aftter 8.-. There were several different things to do today so that I had something to do most of the day. I was out a good long while this afternoon. When I left the office it was raining so hard that I was quite wet when I arrived at the station. M Bertrand told me to wait till M Amy had returned he could not tell me yet whether he could keep me. Passy Paris. M Bertrand had given me yesterday something to pay here at Passy and as the Bureaux were not opened till 9, I took the 9.30 train after having paid it. This morning I had a letter or two to translate. I lunched as usual Mr Hutton came today he was very friendly with me. I had nothing much to do this afternoon. I came back here by a train earlier than usual, after dinner I took the omnibus & went to the rink on the Chaussée d'Autin, Henry Sinnett had sent me a ticket a few days ago, there was a fête, 3 medales were distributed, I met both Simmetts there. Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my usual train this morning I had to copy an Invoice in Spanish twice for the consulate. I lunched as usual at Blonds. At about 2 M Bertrand let me go as I had nothing to do. I came back here, and went out for a short walk with Lupe & then came back and read the Times I received yesterday evening. After dinner Mme Nioussel dressed Velon & me up as ladies and we had some music & dancing in the salon & then some tea. It is 11.20

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my usual train and was first at the office. I had literally nothing today all this morning. M Amy came for the first time since he returned from America. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I had a little more to do in the afternoon. At 6 I went and dined at Duvals and then went to the "theatre français" where I met M Nioussel, Galecia, Marsden & Izod. We saw Les Ouvriers & L'Ami Fritz, latter amused me very much. It is 12.45

Passy Paris. I got up at the usual time but just missed my train & when I got to the office M Levrat & M Bertrand were already there. It has been very cold all day but very fine also. Paul Harding came in this morning and has invited me to go to Courbevoie tomorrow. I had next to nothing to do today. M Bertrand has not yet told me whether he will keep me but I hope not as there is not enough to do. I came back by the 6.15 train, after dinner I began to work at my Grammar but I am so tired that I am going to bed. It is 9.15

I wrote a letter to Ralph for his birthday & a card home. After dinner I read a little of Monte Cristo to Fournier & then went to Mme Bonets, I was the first & many did not come today. Passy Paris. I just caught my usual train nicely & met Antoine Mathias. This morning I had a letter from Papa in which he sends me some money. I wrote to Herr Günther, M Bonet & M Joffroy & a card home. After lunch M Amy said that in furure I should be more in the magasin but that I must help the Garçon to make parcels etc. I went out for M Amy this afternoon. I came back by the 6.15 train & met Turner. After dinner I bought some essence for my lampe and then came up in my room and read Monte Cristo to Fournier. I have read for more than 2 hours. When I came back M Amy gave me a letter that he wanted me to translate into English, which I did. After that I began another Invoice. I came back by the 6.30 train, we had some frogs legs for dinner, after which I came up here and read to Fournier. It is 10.20

This afternoon I went out once or twice, but not for long. It rained a good deal this afternoon, although it had been very fine when I left here in the morning. Turner was in the same train but not the same carriage. I paid my boarding bill up to the 23 of last month. I humbugged about downstairs with 3 of the other fellows. It is 10.

Passy Paris. I took the same train as yesterday and was again first at the office M Amy came in soon after me. I went out once this morning and once this afternoon but not far. I lunched as usual at Blonds but at another table. I wrote home on a post card, and I wrote to Aunt Ida. I did not go out this morning at all but I did this afternoon; I came back by the 6 o'clock train as I left early on account of having to post the letters. We had a soirée here not so nice as 8 inst. Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the same train as usual saw Antoine Mathias who has come back from England. Had a letter from Charley saying he should come on Saturday evening with Louie & perhaps Carry Hill. M Levrat came back today. I was out a little this afternoon but not at all this morning. I came back by the 6.15 train saw Turner. After dinner M Nioussel showed us a game at cards I won 2 sous. It is 10.55

This morning I took Anni Fritz to Charley and took my new book to the office (from the Hotel) I lunched as usual I went out but a very little and had a very little to do all day. I went to Paris by my usual train meeting A Mathias as usual I had literally nothing to do today luckily Papa sent me a Times so that I had one way of spendimg my time, the most I did was to make out a "note d'expédition". Passy Paris. I met A Mathias in my usual train but was not as usual first. I had one or two odds & ends to do this morning and I went out once. Soon before 11. Charley came, I introduced him to M Bertrand, who told me I could go out with him, so I went with them to Versailles by the 12.30 train after having in vain waited 40 minutes for a tram, we lunched there went & saw the Palais and came back outside the 4.30 train, we dined at the Rougemont and did not go out again. Passy Paris. I went in my usual train to Paris but only just had time to catch it. I was not before M Bertrand today again, today I had a little more to do but not much, I went out once or twice. At 11 o'clock I went to Baccarat & bought some little spirit glasses for Louie & Carry & took them in the course of the afternoon. At 6 o'clock I went to them & went with them to a Restaurant, Place de la Bourse after which Charley & Louie went to the Theatre & I walked out with Carry on the Boulevard. It is 11.5

After lunch Charley Louis & I went to the Horse shw then went out shopping with Carrie and got back to the Hotel at about 6 to dinner after which we went to the opera & saw 2 Acts of La Juive, it was too hot to stay, saw Mre Roberts and her party. Passy Paris. I missed my usual train as my chocolate was not ready when I got down I was not first at the office. I was out nearly all morning. I lunched as usual at Blonds; at about 2 I again went out and was out nearly all the afternoon. CHarley, Louie & Caroline Hill left here with Uncle Sidney & party by this mornings mail, I did not see them. It has been very disagreeable weather today & after walking so much I am very tired, it is 9.

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train today but had to run for it as my breakfast was again not ready. M Amy who arrived at the office before I did, sent me to Petit Montrouge & one or two other places directly. I did not get back till 11 o'clock. I went into St Germaine-des-Près; at about 2 I again went out and was out about 3½ hours, I went up the Four St Jacques. It was beautiful weather this morning but about 4 when I was in the Rue St Maur without umbrella or Greatcoat it began to rain very hard so I went back by omnibus. I dined here as usual & had my hair cut (though very badly) afterwards. It is 9.

Passy Paris. Having been taken rather bad in the night by very strong stomach ache & being not much better in the morning I was rather later than usual and took the 8.3 train. I was out a good part of the day and there was a good deal more to do today as a lot of goods have just come in. [Lunch 60c] I had a letter from Papa with a cheaue which I acknowledged by postcard. I do not feel very brilliant this evening. Wrote to Mme Bonet. It is 10.

Passy Paris. I took my usual train today & posted my letter to Mme Bonet thanking her for the ticket to the Ministère des travaux publiques & des Beaux Arts that she dent me yesterday. I was out a good deal again both this morning & this afternoon but not so much as yesterday. I had my lunch as usual. As several goods have come in there is a little more to do. I told M Abel Mignon that I should like to change if I could & he said he would tell me if he heard of anything. I came back by the 6.30 train. It is 10.

After dinner paid my bill he has reduced frs15 for lessons; & learnt grammar. It is 9.30

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train & found out that my clock was 7 minutes slow and that was the reason of my being too late letely. I was out all the morning & as it rained I got a good drenching. I was also out a good deal in the afternoon. I had a letter from Mamma enclosing one from Dora dated 21 January which I answered directly. I went to Mme Bonets who asked me why I had not been lately. I heard some very interesting & curious things about the "Bon Marche". It is 12.15

Passy Paris. I again missed mu usual train & was not the first at the warehouse. I was out nearly all this morning; I linched as usual and was out a good deal this afternoon. It was regular April weather, raining & the sun shining alternatively. I came back here & dined as usual after which Bevis & I took the Omnibus to the "Bon Marché" as I intended buying an umbrella there and I also wated to see it; but when we got there it was shut. We walked to & round the magasins du Louvre & then came back by Omnibus. It is 10.35

I did not go out so much today as I had several "debits" to make but I was out for about 2 hours all together. I lunched as usual. I came back to Passy by the same train as usual with Turner. It has been very fine all day. After dinner I went to Jordans till 10, they were very much amused at Carrie Hill. It is 10.15

Passy Paris. I went to the office by my usual way & was first there on my way I bought a copy book. This morning I was out for about an hour & a half. I lunched as usual. Soon after 10 o'clock M Amy sent me out, I went to different places first & then to the Place du Trône [now the Place de la Nation] where I saw some of the Foire du pain d'épices I then went to Rue Puebla on business & from there to the Buttes Chaumont & then back to the office. Got a certificate from M Reinecke, (page 2, page 3, page 4). Have written to him in acknowledgement. Wrote home to Mother, It is 10.-

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by my usual train in which I met A Mathias, I arrived at the warehouse jusy at the same time as M Amy. I went out twice in the morning but not far. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I did not go out at all this afternoon & had next to nothing to do, in order not to be quite idle I read a Daily News that M Calvary gave me yesterday & translated two letters which I corrected by the Key. This evening I have had a little row with Velon but it is over. It is 8.50

Passy Paris. I was first at the warehouse today having taken the 7.33 train as usual. I was out some time both in the morning and in the afternoon, I lunched as usual at Blonds. I had next to nothing to do at the warehouse. This afternoon I called on M Harding & had a talk about Mrs Roberts he says he shall know soon all about her; he thinks something is not straightforward but will not say what. Very windy all day. Passy Paris. I was first at the office today again. The Garçon was not there as he was at M Bertrand he isgoing to move tomorrow to Verssailles into the new house that he has had built. After lunch I went to the Monistére des Finances & then took the Omnibus & went to the Bon Marceacute; for myself where I bought an umbrella, i pr of Tyrol gloves in which I now find there is a hole & a necktie. All I did for B&A all day was to go to 54 Faubourg Poissonière twice; all the rest of the time I read the Circulation monétaire & fiduciaire or translated some of it. Came back by the 6.15. Bought a weekly Times. After dinner I went with Izod Beves & Marsden to the Opening of the Cirque d'Été, I liked it very much. Heard from Mamma, Mme Bonet had told me to come 8th May. It is 11.25

Passy Paris. I should have been too late today if Mademoiselle had not come & woke me, as it was I just caught my train & was first at the warehouse. I went out this morning for about 1½ hour. I lunched as usual Was out about 3 hours in the afternoon. I translated one "inquiry" of La circulation etc (see Saturday). I came back after having bought a map of the war [Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78] by the 6.15 with Turner. Dined as usual here. Studied a little my french grammar & read L;Ami Fritz. It is 9.50

1 May Tuesday

Passy Paris. I was a little later than usual and although I hurried myself as much as possible I was just too late for my train & was not first at business. I called over an invoice & carried it out with M Bruzeaux, but did not go out or do anything except making out one "note de commission" for B&A all day but continued reading & translating the book I began on Saturday to translate. After dinner I finished reading L'Ami Fritz. It is 9.50

2 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train today & saw Antoine Mathias but did not speak to to him as he was with somebody else. I was first at the office. I stuck my Map of the war on some canvas, then I had one or two various things to do for B&A; had lunch as usual. Went to the Mairie. I translated some more of that book and read about 10 pages on. I came back by the 6.15 the train I usually take now but did not see Turner. After dinner we had a game in the yard. And then a chat in the Lingerie. I have not yet had a letter this week. It is 10.10

Passy Paris. I was just in time to catch my usual train & was first at the office. M. Amy sent me out to do two or three "courses". I went to M. Clauss, my tailor, but he had not yet got any stuff, I am to go again on Saturday. I lunched as usual but had nothing to do in the afternoon, so I went on translating La circulation monetaire & fiducuaire that I began a few days ago. I came back by the 6.15 train with Turner. After dinner we had a game in the yard. It is now 10.15.

4 Friday

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train again although I thought I was a little late. I met M. Mathias. I has a little more to do today this morning I went out to several manufacturers, so that I did not have much time left for translating, but still I did a little. I came back by the 6.45 as I had to call over a Case[?]; I was therefore late for dinner, after which we had a game till 8.30. I then studied a littgle. It is 10.

5 Saturday

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train this morning, I took my dress clothes with me. I was out nearly all the morning. On my way I went to my tailor left him my dress clothes but have not yet chosen anything for my summer suit. This afternoon I was out a littgle & then I went back to the office and made out an invoice & did various things. I came back to Passy by the 6.30. After dinner we had a game in the yard and then all the fellows (or nearly so) came up here till 11.45.

Passy Paris. I was a little later as I had at first forgot to write down my washing, but I just managed to catch my train. I found a letter from Mamma which was dated the 4th and which most likely arrived on Saturday evening. I had a good deal more to do today and had only a minute or so left for Translating. I lunched as usual. I came back with Turner by the 6.15 train. We had a game after dinner till 8.10 and soon afterwards I came up, wrote to Hilda & studied grammar. Ir is 9.45

8 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I caught my train as usual today, but did not go straight to the warehouse as I went out for M Bertrand. When I got to the office I had several things to do, Invoices etc in the afternoon. I was out a good deal. I lunched as usual. At about 5.30 I left the office and went & dined at Mme Bonets there were several other people there to dinner & some more came later on. There were several people who spoke German & English. Had a letter from Father. Postcard. It is 11.40

Passy Paris. I caught my usual the 7.33 train and was first at the office. I had a letter from Dora today. I was out a good deal, today; I lunched as usual at Blonds. It rained a good deal this afternoon that is to say very hard indeed at about 10 minutes to 12. I had a little time to translate some of that book I mentioned above but not much. I came across one sentence that was very difficult to translate. I came back by the 6.15 with Turner. I dined here as usual. After which we had a game & then I went into beves' room with Havel & had a French conversation. It is 10.10

Passy Paris. I got up at about half past 7 o'clock. After breakfast I wrote a letter home & then went to my tailor and then to my hatter where I bought a new "Topper". I then came back here & had lunch in a restaurant. Soon afterwards I fetched Hilda and went out for a walk & a row with her. I then came back here had dinner and went with Marsden & Izod to the Odeon to see Mauprat by George Sand. I enjoyed it very much; Came back in a cab and at a good rate. It is about 12.30.

Passy Paris. I was rather late & my chocolate was not quite ready, however I just managed to catch my train but only just. I was first at the office. Had a letter from father with order for B & A. I went out once this morning but not at all worth mentioning in the afternoon. I had not much to do either. I translated a small Chapter of french. Came back here by the 6.30 and after having dinner had a game at Hats in the Court & then studied a little grammar. It is 10

Passy Paris. I was just in good time for my train this morning. I met A. Mathias. This morning M Amy sent me out to 3 Manufacturers & I went to my tailor who had written yesterday to say he could not get enough of the stuff I had chosen on Thursday, so I chose some other stuff altogether. May Hickson came to the office whilst I was out & left a note; I went and saw her for about 5 minutes at 6 o'clock. I came back by the 6.30 it was raining very hard. I read La Juive through, It is 10.-

Passy Paris. Although I set my alarum I missed my usual train & got to the office at the same time as M Amy. I was out nearly all the morning. I lunched as usual. I did not go out at all, except into the Rue d'Haureville all the afternoon. But I had several things to do indoors. At 6 o'clock I went to the Ruw Castglione where May is staying & left my Boediker's Paris, & then took the 6.30 train back. After dinner we had a game in the courtyard. I bought some Essence & candles. [Refresh 30] It is 10.15.

Passy Paris. I was just in time to catch the 7.33 train this morning & met A Mathias whom I had not seen for sometime. I was first at the warehouse; where I had several little things to do, I went out once or twice; I lunched as usual at Blonds. I had a letter from Ralph from Luneburg. He seems to like being there on the whole. This evening I went to Mme Bonets & took leave of Miss Koch who is going to Germany till about October, It is 12.15

Passy Paris. I caought my usual train & saw Antoine Mathias as usual. I was first at the office where I heard Mr Hausmann from an American client of ours had arrived at Paris yesterday. This morning I made out an Invoice. I went at 11 to my tailors tried on my clothes and then went to lunch. After lunch I went out to different houses with M Hausmann and we did not get back to the office till 6. I then went and dined with him at the hotel and afterwards we went with his friend to the Jardin Mabille. It is now 11.40.

Passy Paris. I was up in good time today and caught my train as usual, was rather surprised at the news of Jules Simon's dismissal. I was first at the office, where I did not stop long as I went out with Mr Haussmann again to different manufacturers. We lunched togather and did not get back to the office till close upon 6 o'clock. I wrote a postcard home acknowledging receipt of £9 yesterday. I was with him all the evening we did not go anywhere particular. It is 12.05

Passy Paris. I met A Mathias in the same train as usual, and Mr Amy on my way to the office. I left again soon afterwards with Mr Haussmann and went to several manufacturers of several different articles. We were out all the morning & did not finish what we had to do till 3 o'clock & then I went out with him to go some provisions for his journey to Frankfurt a/m. I dined with him & then came straight back. It is 9.-

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train and met A Mathias. I had a card this morning from May asking me to go to Versailles with them on Sunday tomorrow. I wrote back and accepted. I did not go out at all all day except to lunch which I had as usual. I made out a copy of what Mr Haussmann had bought entered it & began to make out the notes. Dined here. After dinner Herr Clauss brought my new clothes they fit very well. It is 9.30

Passy Paris. I went to Paris as usual today but did not meet Antoine Mathias. I made out an Invoice & several other things and left at 11 for breakfast after which I did not go bak but came back here. Has a game at Billiards with Turner & then went to the races with several fellows from here. it was very wet. After the races I came back here had dinner and then went & had two games at billiard with Lupe. I won one by 13 and lost the other by 2. It is now 16.30

Passy Paris. I missed my usual trainand therefore was not first at the office as usual. This morning I finished making out some notes de Commission and in the afternoon I did one or two various little things I also translaed some of Jules Le Cesnes's book. I had a letter from home. It was very nasty weather all day long & very cold; at ½ past 5 I went & said ood Bye tothe Prestons who leave tomorrow afternoon. It is 10.-

Passy Paris. I just missed my usual train today and was agin later at the office than M Amy. I was out a good part of the day with a Manchester Manufacturer and introduced him to several houses "de la part de" Mess B&A. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I wrote to Mamma and also to Ralph sending latter a photograph of myself. All the time I was at the office I had nothing to do but as I had rather a headache I did not translate anything. I then went to lunch afterwhich I went back to the warehouse and as I had nothing to do there I translated some of Jules Le Coene's book. I came back on the 6.15 train with Turner. After dinner I studied a little french grammar & then mended my coat. It is 10.-

Passy Paris. I just missed my usual train today but was however first at the Magasin that is to say I was before M Amy or Bertrand. I had one or two things to do this morning for the house. I lunched as usual after which I wrote a letter to Arthur but could not send it as I find I have not got his address. I wrote a postcard to Ralph. Passy Paris. I caught my usual train and met A Mathias. It was veryfine this morning but soon got cloudy however it did not rain. I was first at the magasin. M Amy did not come all day long. I had a letter to write for the house but did not do hardly anything else all day for them. I lunched as usual. I translated some more of that book. Came back in same train as usual with Turner. After dinner I paid my boarding bill for 2 months [227.05], went out for a walk & had a game at Whist. Spoke a good deal of German. It is 11.20

At 6 o'clock I met Turner at the Passage des Panoranas went and dined in the Palais-Royal with him and then went to the "Français" where Izod met us and saw Jean d'Acier. It is very good. Passy Paris. Althoughh having missed my usual train, I was obliged to take the same one as I did yesterday I was at the magasin before M Amy. This morning I got a letter from Mme Rouvière who seemed very much offended what at I do not know. Have written to say I should not go. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I was out several times for B&A. Had a letter from Ralph wrote home. Came back by the 6 o'clock train. Went out for a walk with Beves & Lupe. It is 10.-

Passy Paris. I again missed my usual train but it was because my clock was slow. M Amy was again at the office before me. I had a little more to do today and was out a good deal particularly in the afternoon when I bought an Alarum for the new Spanish fellow. This afternoon I took my trousers to my tailor and paid him for my new clothes. I lunch "at the Roastbeef" Rue de la Bourses today but like Blonds better. I came back in the same train as Turner. After dinner I took a "nocturnal walk" with Lupe and then had a game of billiards. I was 23 and he 22 I had been ahead all along then he made a break of 8 & won. It is 10.35

Passy Paris. I caught the 7.33 my usual train and was first at the magasin. I did not have very much to do this morning. I lunched in a Restaurant in the Rue des Granges Batelières but it is not so good as Blonds. This afternoon I was out a good deal; at about 4.30 on my way back I went into Mr Hardings and met Mr & Mrs Chas Harding. I am invited to a parrty on the 2nd of June. It was very warm walking, close, and it rained a good deal. Took a nocturnal walk with Lupe & Price. It is 10.15

Passy Paris. I caught my usual train and was first at the Warehouse. I had a letter from home and Mamma forwarded Arthur's last letter. I posted my letter to Arthur. I had nothing to do all the morning. I lunched as usual at Blonds, 10 cachecs. This afternoon M Amy said that I had better look out for some other place as I was losing my time doing nothing which is qute true but it is difficult to find anything now. I came back with Turner. Came back by the 6.30. Went in the Bois after dinner with Bevis. It is 10.-

Passy Paris. I again missed my train as being very tired from Saturdy still I overslept myself, M Amy was at the magasin when I got there. I had a little more to do today. I lunched as usual. After which I had several little unimportant things to do. M Amy sent me out to the Rive Gauche but that is all I went out all day. It rained nearly all day long and has got much cooler. I asked M Amy for a holiday on Thursday for the wedding and he has given it to me. Came back in 6.15. Had a game at Cards with Warsden after dinner. It is 10.15

Passy Paris. I went by the 7.33 train and met Antoine Mathias as usual. I was first at the office. I had a letter to translate and went out once in the morning. I lunched as usual at Blonds. After lunch I went out two or three times, translated another letter and did several other little things. I do not know whether I am expected at the breakfast tomorrow as although Paul has asked me I have not had an invitation from Mr & Mrs Arthur. I came back here as usual by the 6.15 train with Turner. After dinner I went out for a stroll with some of the other fellows. Bought a black neck-tie. It is 10.20

Passy Paris. I left here at about 10.20 took a cab and went to the English Embassy where Paul's Wedding was to take place at 11 o'clock. I was early but the wedding people were very late not coming till about 11.40 after the Embassy we all went to the Madeleine where a mass was celebrated and then started in 15 carriages for Asnières (Paul invited me to breakfast on arriving at the Embassy). We first had breakfast (about 60 people) Mr & Mrs Paul then left we walked about in the garden till about 8 had some fireworks & then danced till about one, everyone was very tired. It is 2.-

Passy Paris. Having set my alarum I wole up in good time and took my usual train, met Antoine Mathias. Found a letter from Mamma at the magasin. M Amy told me he thought M Bruzeaux had found me a place but it is not yet fixed. I went to se the Gentleman M Bruzeaux had spoken to but he had forgotten to speak to his brother in law, or something of the kind. I had a good deal of translating to do for B&A I came back home in the 6.15. After dinner we walked in the Bois & rowed on the lake. It is 10.-

I was a little later than usual I just missed the 7.48 train, took the 8.3 with transfee-ticket and went to Charonne to Rue des Pyronées and then went to the magasin by omnibus; I had a very little to do today I went out once or twice. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I wrote a very long letter to Dora for her birthday 11 ordinary letter paper pages all about the party & wedding. I told Mr Harding about my going to leave B&A. He has had good news from Mr & Mrs Paul. It has been very close all day. It rained very hard at 6, has cleared up now. It is 10.-

Passy Paris. I took my usual train this morning but did not meet A Mathias as usual I went out once or twice this morning. I lunched as usual. Sent a little Videpche to Dora by Service Postale Neesser & Samter. This afternoon I went out a good deal for B&A And wrote a letter & copied 2 invoices, etc. I wrote a postcard to Dora, Came back by the 6.15. It has been most frightfully hot all day 32° in good shade about 50° in the sun. Although I have been in my nightgown for nearly as hour wth windows wide open I perspire. It is 10.30

12 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I meant to go and take a bath before breakfat but it was not very fine this morning and so I did not I took my usual train but did not see A Mathias again. There was but very little to do today I went out once for them and on my way I bought a pair of bathing drawers at the Belle Jardinière. It cleared up at about 8 and ws excessively hot all day. I lunched as usual. This afternoon I went to see a M Quinter who has given me a card to his brother in law who I shall see tomorrow. It is 10.40

Passy Paris. I got up at 6 this morning and went and took a cold bath in the Seine I was just too late to bath with Mathias'. I came back and had my Chcolate and then took the 7.33 train and was first at the magasin. I went to see M Rowe (M Quinter's brother-in-law) but he says the place is taken. I called on M Abel Mignon & Jordan both had heard of nothing. I lunched as usual. Had a very little to do for B&A today all I did was to go out once or twice. At 6 I went to the Coin de Rue and bought a Peignoir de Bain a very nice one And came back by Omnibus where I met Antoine M's friend. It has not been quite so hot all day today. It is 10.50

Passy Paris. I went to Paris this morning by the 7.33 my usual train and met A Mathias. I was first at the office today as I have been for some time lately. I did nothing at all all morning for the house, lunched as usual at Blonds and bought 15 cachets. This afternoon I went to Charonne and one other place for them the rest of the time I translated some of Jules Le Coesse's book. I came back by the 6.15. It has been much cooler & rained a good deal. Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 7.33 train and as usual I met A Mathias and was first at the Magasin. I had one or two things to do both this norning as well as this afternoon, I had a letter from Mamma. It has been very fine all day today but not at all close but nice and cool in the shade this afternoon. I had my hair cut in Paris. I came back here by the 6.30 train & did not see Turner as usual. I have begun to cut a dog's head for the top of a walking stick out of some Manita wood. It is 10.10

Passy Paris. I took a bath this morning in the Swimming bath at the Pont de Grenelle bought 12 cachets came back afterwards and went to Paris by my usual train and saw A Mathias but did not go with him as he was with someone else. I was first at the magasin I had one or two little things to do but nothing of any importance. I went out twice. I came back here with Turner by the 6.15. After dinner I went into the Bois and went on cutting my dogshead. It was very fine today, hot in the sun but there was a sharpish breeze. It is 10.30

I got my usual and took the 7.33 train but did not see Antoine Mathias. I was first at teh Magasin but did not stay there long as I had to go out. I was out nearly all the morning. I lunched as usual but was out again nearly all the afternoon. I have not yet got a letter from Dora although I sent the packet last Monday. I told M Amy about my rather wanting to get into an insurance office & he said he would speak to M Bertrand. It has been very close & it rained a little in the afternoon but not much. It is 10.25

Passy Paris. I did not take a bath this morning as I had intended to as it looked so very gloomy, I afterwards missed my usual train and was therefore not first at the Magasin. I lunched as usual today and ate some melon for the first time this year. I did not go out again all day except at about 20 to 6 o'clock. M Amy again sent me outm but I did not return to the magasin. After dinner I went to see Me Bonet, there was only one other gentleman there. It is 11.30

Passy Paris. I took my usual train today and met A Mathias who told me that Mme Calvary had a little boy who was born last Sunday. I was first at the Magasin, where I found a letter from Dora in which she acknowledged receipt of my little "Videpoche". I did not go out much today. I lunched as usual at Blonsa. It was very hot & close today at about 4.30 it rained very hard for about 30 minutes and at 6 again, but it had not rained at all in Passy I found out when I came back, which I did by the 6.30 train. I went out in the wood with Bevis after dinner. I bought some Camphor for clothes. It is 10.35

Passy Paris. I got up at about 6 o'clock went and had a Swimming bath. I came back here had breakfast and then took my usual train in which I met A Mathias. I was first at the office.I was in it all the morning, went and lunched at 11 o'clock as usual. In the afternoon I went out for about 2 hours. I came back here by the 6.15 with Turner who leaves for England tomorrow for 2 weeks. After dinner I went to the Fête de Neuilly with Lupe Beves Marsden & Izod. It is 11.30

Passy Paris. As I was rather tired from yesterday I did not get up when I first woke at 6 & consequently went to sleep & missed my train. I was however first at the magasin. I was in all the morning, had a letter from Mamma & one enclosed from Arthur, latter was very interesting. I hear Harry has got a little boy. I went out this afternoon with a gentleman from Jamaica to buy a few things. I did not go back to the office afterwards but went straight to the station where I just caught the 6.30 train. After dinner I went in the Bois with Bevis, It is much cooler today. It is 10.20

Passy Paris. I was again too late to catch my usual train & had to take the 7.48 one. I was however first at the office. M Amy did not come all day. I did not go out at all this morning lunched as usual; at about 3 the same gentleman came I showef him different samples and he then left; soon afterwards I went out about his commissions. M Harding came into the office & saw the clocks there and asked me to procure him one. I bought a lb of cherries cheaper than I ever have. After dinner I went in the Ranelagh with Warsden. Passy Paris. I was again too late to catch my usual train I do not know how it is that my alarum does not wake me now. I was not the first today but the last. This morning I did several things in the office and after lunch which I took as usual I went out with the Jamaica fellow. We also went to the Invalides where I saw for the first time Napileon's tomb. I thought it would be much finer than it is. This evenng I went into the Bois with Lupe & Galecio. It is 10.20

Passy Paris. Although I heard my alarum strike today I went to sleep again and was not down till ¼ to 8. I took a Bateau Mouche went to the Hotel de Ville in it & then made some courses. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I did not go out much this afternoon. The Jamaica fellow did not come as arranged so I went to the hotel and found he had left by this morning's train. Passy Paris. My alarum woke me well today and I had time to catch my usual train. I made some "courses" before going to the office, where I found, when I did go a letter from mamma & one from Papa. A Mathias had also been & left word that I was to go and see him at once, si I did; he gave me the address of a house where he said they wanted someone, I went but the place is for someone to help in the bureau & who gets nothing. I lunched as usual. Went out to several manufacturers. Got the stick I had asked Marchand to make for me. Wrote a card home in acknowledgement of Papa's letter & contents. I went out in the wood in the evening - levy, Variation Jr, Humbug & friend. It is 11.-

28 Thursday

Passy Paris. I got up at about ¼ to 6 and went and had a swimming bath at the Pont de Grenelle, Nathias' who go every morning were already out when I got there. I caught my usual train. I had one or two little things to do this morning. I lunched as usual; after lunch I was out for about 4 hours carrying Notes de Commission and only just got back to the office at about 6 o'clock. After dinner I went with Warden & Beves o the Fête de Neuilly. We saw some fireworks & the River was very nicely lit up by chinese lanterns. It is about 12.20

29 Friday

Passy Paris. I only just had time to take the same train as usual, met Antoine Mathias. Made out 2 or 3 invoices this morning; lunched at Blonds as usual. From one to two I went out with M Wilson to buy a umbrella and one or two other things. Afterwards I was out nearly 3 hours taking Notes de Commission to the Manufacturers. It has been much warmer today than all the week. Came back by the 6.15. It is M Nioussel's fête today but it is to be kept tomorrow. Have given him two lamps and a clock Louis XVI. Went into the wood. It is 10.40

Passy Paris. I got up at 5.30 or thereabouts and went to the baths where I met Mathias' and M Calvery. After breakfast I took my usual train. I was in the office all day today having to translate a long document for the Court of Common Pleas of New York. At 11 o'clock before lunch I went & said how do you do to Paul Harding who came back from his honeymoon on Wednesday. I lunched as usual. Came back here by th 6 train & went into the wood. Afterwards M Nioussels fête has been celebrated today. It is 11.10

Passy Paris. I do not know whether it was the effect of having bathed twice yesterday or what it was but I transpired a great deal all night. I got up and caught my usual train and saw A Mathias as usual. I had a lot of letters to copy this morning & did not finish till about 2 o'clock. I had my lunch as usual & bought 10 cachets. In the afternoon I was out a good deal and got very tired towards the end. I dined as usual took a walk in the wood with Helen & Thavel till 8.30 & then came in & read up some grammer. Gisence. Passy Paris. I took my usual train but did not see Antoine Mathias. I was first at the office, soon after I got there I went out on courses & did not get back till lunchtime. Had lunch as usual. Afterwards I went out again and was out nearly all the afternoon. Got very tired. At Six I went to Sinnets, Henry is still in England & Edward was not very well. I dined at th Palais Royal and then came to Passy and spent the evening at M Jordans. I saw two men at the Pont des St Peres catch some very good sized fish; bigger than I have ever seen caught here. It is 10.50

Passy Paris. I just missed my usual train & did not see A Mathias whom I met later on in the day. I had a good deal more to do than I have had lately, went out once or twice. I lunched as usual at Blonds. This afternoon I had a tarif to copy and different things to do, I also went out again two or three times. It has not been very fine all day, but has rained a good deal. I came back ere by the 6.30 train & dined here as usual. After dinner we had a game at Nain Jaune with M Nioussel I did not have any luck at all but lost all the while or nearly so. It is 10.30

Passy Paris. I got up at about 7 and was just in time to catch my usual train which was about 2 minutes early. I did not see Antoine Mathias I did not have so much to do as I did yesterday. I went out once or twice. I lunched as usual. In the afternoon I went to Charonne. As the Garçon was not back at 6 I had to stay till ½ past 6 and therefore had to take the 6.45 train got here when they had half done dinner. I took a turn in the wood afterwards came back at about 8.45. It is now 10.5

Passy Paris. I took my usual train from here but changed at Courcelles and went on business to Charonne. When I got to the office I found a letter from Mamma, with a copy of two advertisements in the "Times" which I answered. I lunched as usual at Blonds. I went out once in the afternoon; whilst it was raining hard, but the rain did not last long. I have had a pain in my fore-head all yesterday & today, M Amy thinks it must be the neuralgia. I copied 2 of my certificates this evening. It is 10.10

Passy Paris. I took my usual train and met A Mathias as usual was also first at the office. I did not go out more than once or twice this morning, at about 10.30 I called on M Joffroy to whom I had a letter of introduction in February, he received me very friendly and said he would have taken me then & he would see what he could do for me, he told me to write to him a letter, so I did. I had very little to do this afternoon; came back by the 6.15. After dinner bought a cane and made a ring for bath. It is 10.40.

Passy Paris. I missed my usual train but caught the next one. This morning I did one or two things for B&A and at 10.30 I went ot see M Joffroy. I had to wait about 20 minutes & then I went into his cabinet he read my certificates & asked me several questions & then told me he would take me on the same conditions as B&A, I could go to-morrow if I liked. After lunch I spoke to M Amy who said I might just as well go tomorrow as there was nothing for me to do. So I went and told M Joffroy. I wrote home & to M Günther & Oberamtsrichter Reinecke. Went in the wood. It is 10.25

10 Tuesday

Passy Paris. I took my usual train and went straight to M A Joffroy the director of the Liebig's Ectract of Meat Co (Limited) London where I had a manuscript to translate from German to French. He also gave me a letter to write in English. I went to lunch at Blonds at 12 o'clock. In the afternoon I went on translating. At 6 o'clock I found out that all the employees went away at 7, however as he had said he would take me on the same conditions as B&A I left at 6. It is 10.20

11 Wednesday

Passy Paris.I took my usual train and got at M Joffroy's at 8.15 a few minutes after I had been there he came up to me and said that I must always be there at 8 punctually & that all the employees stayed till 7 and I must also, as he could not make an exception. I also found out from one of the Employees that I should have to go on Sundays sometimes, as he has thus unjustly changed his part of the conditions I do not know what to do; went to M Harding & M Amy both were out. I had a very little to do after I had finished the translation I began yesterday. He let me come back at 6 today. Mamma writes that she is happy I have found something new. I can scarcely say I am content of the change as I consider he has been unjust. I shall have to change my life altogether as I can no longer dine here. It is 10.

Passy Paris. I had set my alarm at 5, got up woke the others and went to the swimming bath at Grenelle, had a good deal of fun. I took, after having had my chocolate, the 7.18 train and got to Liebig's at 8 punctually. I lunched as usual called on M Harding who advised me to speak to M Joffroy again and if he was obstinate to give notice. I spoke to him at 7 he said he could not change anything, I must come on Sindays when it is my turn, and stop till 7 every evening. I dined at Blonds. Wrote to M. Ogeraw & home. It is 11.30

13 Friday

Passy Paris. I got up at about ½ past 6 and took the 7.18 train met the 2 younger Mathias' as I did yesterday, they say Master Calvay is getting on very well it will be 4 weeks old on Sunday, I had a good deal more to do today but have still spare time. Saw M Amy & M Harding told them what M Joffroy had said etc Stayed till 7 at the office, Dined at Blonds & then went to Clauss and fetched the clothes I had taken to be cleaned, Came back by boat, got back at about 9.15 took a turn in the Bois & came in. It is 10.30

Passy Paris. I got up at about the same time & took the same train to Paris & arrived first at the office. I had more to do today but not yet enough. I went to lunch at 12 o'clock at Blonds. This afternoon I had less to do and after all I do not think there is very much to do there. I left at 7 & dined at Blonds. Opposite was sitting a young American & another Gentleman, first said he thought I looked like an Englishman, latter thought a German, greatly amused me they were going to bet. I came back by the 8.30. It is 11.

Passy Paris. I bathed at about 9. Went to church, came back had a letter from home. Did not write. Went to Mathias this evening. It is 10.30

Passy Paris. This morning I took the 7.18 train and was first at the office where I did not have much to do. After lunch which I had as usual at Blonds I saw M Amy who has offered to take me back but I said I did not think Father would like it. M Harding says I must not "gêne" myself with a man like M Joffroy and if I think I can tell him my opinion better in a letter I had better write him one. I dined at Blonds, came back by the 8.30. I wrote to Father & M Joffroy the expressions of Father and I think rather strong. It is 12.

17 Tuesday

Passy Paris. This morning I took the same train as yesterday. Posted my letter to Father, was first at the office. I did not like to give my letter to M Joffroy. I lunched as usual. I had nearly nothing to do all this afternoon. At 7 I went to M Joffroy and said I could not stay on his new conditions, he said he never had said that he would take me on the same conditions (as B & A) but I am sure he did. I said I should like to go directly unless he forced me to give him notice, he said very well but as it is 7 come tomorrow morning. It is 10.40.

18 Wednesday

Passy Paris. I went to Paris by the 7.18 train went straight to Lielrg's where I made out 4 or 5 Invoices. M Joffrey then called me, paid me & I left, I went to see the Petites Affiches, there was nothing. I went to M. A Mignon who said he would look out for me. I then went to M Harding's & saw Paul who sent me to M Leviel who said he would ask his friends, he also gave me three addresses. I then went to Mathias' did not see Antoine, went to the three people whose address M Levid gave me. They knew of nothing but will look out for me. I lunched where Mathias' do. Went to a café and wrote a card home. Went back to Harding's. Went to Jordan - Met Lamphovener. Came back by the 6.- It is 10.10

Passy Paris. I had breakfast with the others then came up & wrote home to Mamma & to M Bonet at St Denis. I was very much surprised at not having a letter this morning from home & am almost afraid they must have written to Liebig's. I went to Paris by the 10.30. Went to Mathias', they know of nothing yet. Went back to Hardings who have made an appointment for tomorrow. Saw Linnett knows of nothing, Came back at 3. Went to the music; dined here & then had a game at Whist. Dernot is in a fury. It is 10.40.

20 Friday

Passy Paris. I got up to breakfast at 8. I stayed here till about 8.45 and then went to Paris by train. I sent a Commissionaire to Joffrey's to see if there was a letter for me but there was none. I then went with Harding's foreman to a commission agents who perhaps will take me on his recommendation, they are going to think about it and write to me. I came back at 1 and found a letter from home saying I might as well accept B & A's offer and go back. I must now wait. Bathed with the fellows from here. Read André by G Sand. It is 11.

Passy Paris. I had breakfast with the others as yesterday. I finished reading "André" do not care for it much. Played at whist with Galecio & Velon. Left here at about 11 took the omnibus & went to Paris lunched at Blonds, went to Hardings' but did not see them. Came back by omnibus Went to the swimming bath at Pont Grenelle with Price and Rico had a splendid bath the sun was very hot but the water was rather cool. After dinner we went for a walk in the wood & then came in. I had a conversation with Cauvet. It is 10.25.

Passy Paris. Breakfast with Price & Rico. Went to Chapel came back slept a little. Dined at Mathias', had good fun. Has been very hot, is enormously close. It is 10.30

Passy Paris. I had breakfast with the others at 8. After which I played a game or two at cards with several of the other fellows. At about 11 I went to a restaurant and lunched. I then went to see Hardings' at Paris, they had no news, so I came back. Went at 4 to bathe with the other fellows. Dined here as usual. This evening I had a letter from mamma telling me of the sudden death of Harry's Fanny. She also sends me an advertisement to be answered. It is now 10.50

Passy Paris. Breakfasted with the others as yesterday and then after having finished reading Marie Tudor by Victor Hugo, answered the advertisement Mamma sent me yesterday I lunched in a restaurant here in Passy, took the 1.33 train & went to Paris bought a black tie gloves & had a band put on my hat. Saw Hardings no news. Came back at 4. Bathed with the rest and had the best bath I have had this year. After dinner I went to Madame Bonet found her alone. It is 11.-

25 Wednesday

Passy Paris. Breakfasted with th others today as I have done letely. At about ¼ past 10 I went with them to bathe. We were there a very long while rather too long. It was past 12 when we got back. I lunched at a Restaurant in the Grande Rue. After which I took the 1.33 train and went to Harding's from there I went to Mess Benoit where I had been on Friday, but they say I must wait another week. I also went to a house M Bond had told me to go to but they say they employ noone. I have read Victor Hogo's Angelo after finishing Lucrèce Borgia that I began yesterday. Dined hre as usual. Went for a stroll in the wood. It is 10.35

Passy Paris. I lunched with the others at 8 o'clock. Price left at ½ past 11 I then went and had my lunch in Passy. When I came back I heard that there had been a row at dinner about Price not having said Goodbye to Velon & Havel. I went to Paris with Beves, saw Hardings, heard that Benoit will take me on the 15th of August. Saw Mr Amy who evidently does not want me but a "garçon de Magasin". Wrote a Postcard home. Came back by the 5.15 train. It is much colder. It is 10.40.

27 Friday

Passy Paris. I breakfasted with the others at 8 o'clock humbugged about waiting for a letter in vain & then went to lunch at about 12 o'clock. After which I went to Paris by train saw Hardings but they have not yet got a decisive answer from benoit. I wrote to M Bonet at home. I called on M Tuquet but he had not heard of anything. Came back here as usual. Had a game ot two at whist & afterwards chatted with Tico. It is 11.-

Passy Paris. I breakfasted with the others again as of late, got as usual a "Petit Journal" waited for a letter & got one from Mamma. She says I may come back if I like. I lunched in Passy in the Grande Rue took the Omnibus to Paris & called on Hardings, have not yet got a direct answer must wait till Monday, Called on M.A.Mignon he was out. Looked at some rooms in Paris noting good, Came back at 4. Bathed with Rico. Sold some old clothes. Had a game at Billiards with Galecio & Izod & then a talk with them. It is 10.45.

Passy. Breakfasted & lunched here, went to church. Came back alone, bathed, went to Music at the Ranelagh. Dined out, It is 11.00

I got up as usual and had breakfast with the others. After which I packed my porte manteau etc. Sold and old great coah [greatcoat?]. Went to Paris saw Hardings. Benoit has promised to take me. So I said good bye to M Harding, Mathias & M Amy, did not see Jordan. Went back to Passy, bathed, dined at 6, left at 7 & took the 8 o'clock train to London. The train was very full & it was very hot. I had some very pleasant travelling companions. Got as far as Dieppe at 12 & only left at 4.15 by steamer

31 Tuesday

for Newhaven. We had a splendid passage & could easily have got over in 5½ hours but we could not get into Newhaven till 11 on account of the tide. It was very hot on board. We left Newhaven at about 12.30 & got to London at 2.45 about ½ an hour late. Papa & Godfrey met me at London Bridge I came up by omnibus with latter. Mamma is the only one at home. Clara has gone away & so has Maggie. Saw Harry Aunt Ida Fanny Clarchen & Alfred, in the evening Godfrey beat me at Chess. It is 11.20

1 Aug Wednesday

Highgate. I had breakfast with Mamma Pap & Godfrey all who are at home. I then went down to London with Godfrey, I went to Smithfield & from there to see Jimy Rawlings about going into his office, he is a teabroker but he wants me to stay 2 years for nothing so nothing will come of it from there I went to Jones & had a romp with the little boys, had lunch with them Fanny Mamma & Mrs Nicolls from there we came home by tram. After dinner we mowed the grass & I had a game at chess with Godfrey who won. It is about 11.30

Highgate. I again went down to Town with Godfrey, I went to Smithfield, he to his office, I got some boots & a pair of trowsers for 9/11 & several things for Mamma at the stores. I lunched at Smithfield where we had a telegram to tell us of the sudden death of Grandmama of Frant [?]. Came home by tram. Went into Aunt das & saw Harry's babies & went down the hill with mother. Dan Fanny & Harry dined here tonight & played biliards. I had a game with Godfrey & lost. It is 12.-

Highgate. After Papa & Godfrey had gone to town & when Mamma began to write letters I gardened for about 2 hours Mamma then went to see Miss Grant & I wrote to Tante Nandine & Ralph. When I had finished at about 4 I went to Aunt Ida's and had two games of lawn-tennis with Herbert & came back at about 5.- After dinner I had a game at chess with Godfrey who lost his queen at the beginning & I won it took some time. It is 12.

Highgate. I sawed some wood in the yard for logs for winter fires & hurt my finger. At about ½ past 11 Mamma & I went down to town by tram to Kentish Town & on by train, we first went to MeeKings then to Smithfield, from there I went to see M Belier & then came back in the 1.34 train with Godfrey. At about 4 o'clock We went to the Nettlefolds where we played at lawn-tennis with Hugh Frances & another lady & Gentleman. We dined there and then played at Shell out. It is 12.40

Highgate. Papa, Godfrey & I went for a walk round Traitors Hill to Hampstead. Noone came to dinner. went out for a walk in the evening. It is 12.

Bank Holiday

Highgate. Godfrey had to go to business as lawyers do not keep this holiday. Papa & Mamma called on Mrs Williamson & I went into Aunt Ida's & played at lawn-tennis. I came back to lunch with Papa & Mama. Papa & I went back again & had some more games at lawn-tennis. I did not play so much as in the morning. After dinner we had some little games on our lawn & then I beat Godfrey a game at chess & after a lot of exceitemet we throught bad play on my part had a drawn game. It is 11.50

Highgate. I sawed some wood in the morning & at about 11 Herbert, John & Max came to ask me to go fishing with them, but I could not as I had to take the boy to Williamsons, from there I went & saw Louie & her children I had taken Puck with me who was very glad to see her puppie. I lunched there & then came back on foot, saw Mrs Nettlefold. Came here & finished Oliver Twist. It rained nearly all day. After dinner Godfrey beat me a game at chess. Had a bath. It is 10.30

8 Wednesday

Highgate. I had breakfast as usual at about 8 o'clock with Papa Mamma & Godfrey after Papa & Godfrey had left to go to town I sawed some wood & put the top of the Garden a little to rights & then had lunch with Mamma I went fishing with Herbert John & Maxwell. John caught 16 herbert & Max 7 each & I caught 6 it was at Jeakes & consequently they were nearly all carp a few roach were among the quantity but they were all very small. We had dinner here as usual & went to bed at about the same time as usual here that is 11.30

Highgate. We had breakfast as usual after which I went up to Golders & had my hair cut & shampooed, after that I made a treadle to the sharpening stone & sharpened the chopper & chopped up some wood I went to Aunt Ida's & Nettlefolds to ask whether the little children could come they were to but as it was very wet in the afternoon they did not. Godfrey was at Wimbledon with Alfred & ?an. Began Barnaby Rudge. 11.-

10 Friday

Highgate. At about ½ past ten Ruth Godfrey, Grace, Bertha & Jessie nettlefold came & stayed about ¾ of an hur then the first two left & the others stayed and played a Croquet Lawn-tennis and one or two other games and at about 12 I took them home. I had lunch with Mamma. Godfrey & I went to Uncle George's. I went at 4 & Godfrey came straight from business. We enjoyed ourselves. It is 12.

11 Saturday

Highgate. After breakfast was over I made two posts for our lawn-tennis net they took me rather a long while I answered an advertisement in the Times. Went to Aunt Ida's & brought back two lawn tennis bats, Sidney Hickson came at about one we played a little on the lawn had lunch played again & then Sidney & I went fishing next door & caught about 20 fish. Sidney went to dinner at Aunt Ida's. Godfrey & I bought 2 balls & had a set of Games. Godfrey & Papa played billiards, it is 11.,/p.

Highgate. Went for a walk at Uncle Sidney's. Dan & Fanny came to dinner played L-tennis. After tea went to Aunst Ida's. It is 11.-

13 Monday

Highgate. We had breakfast as usual At About 10 o'clock Johnnie Nettlefold & his two cousins came here & I went with them to fish at Jeakes. We fished till about ½ past 12 and caught 42. After lunch I went over to Aunt Id'a and beat Herbert a game of lawn-tenis but John beat me by 3 games. At about 4 I left went to Smithfield where I met Godfrey & had coffee with Charley & then went to see "Our boys" which we both liked very much we got back here at about 12 o'clock.

14 Tuesday

Highgate. Soon after breakfast I went down the hill & ordered two or three things for Mama & then went to see Miss Grant at St Johns Park but did not find her at home I then went to Aunt Ida's beat Max a game of lawn tennis but let Herbert beat me by 2 games. Had lunch here watered the garden & fetched Herbert to dinner before & after dinner we had some games at L T. Afterwards we played at billiards & shell out Alfred came at about 9 I won 3d at Shell out. It is 11.

15 Wednesday

Highgate. After breakfast I looked out the trains to Brighton & Eastbourne and wrote to Horace & Clara to say I should come & spend a day with them. I went & had two games at Lawn tennis with Herbert, he beat me one and I beat him another. Soon after lunch 2 boy Netlefolds, 2 Wymans & Lucy Nettlefold came to fish I went with them. Lucy & I came here and had 3 games at L.T. The boys stayed to tea. I bought a watch key. Am to leave tomorrow morning although I have had no letter from Paris. It is 10.50

16 Thursday

Brighton. I left Highgate soon after 8 with Mamma and went to Victoria Station by tram & omnibus. I left it for here by th 10 o'clock express train and got here at 11.40. I soon found out Horace's place but he was out. When he came in we went to his lodgings & dined after which he drove me about in a chaise. I went on the cliff for a good long walk. In the evening after tea we went up to the cricket ground & after supper onto the pier which is a fine one. It is 10.30

17 Friday

Eastbourne. Horace & I had breakfast at about 8 he then went to Business & I had a bath in the sea & hurt my toe. I left Brighton at 11.40 and arrived here where Willie met me at about 1 o'clock. Clara & baby seem very well former is not so. We spent the whole day at Mrs Jeakes sen. going out between meals, we went to the Park where Edith Jeakes and I went on the rink Willie came on but did not get on well. In the evening we saw some niggers on the Grand Parade. It is 10.30

Eastbourne. I got up at about 8.30 and went & had a bathe in the sea & a very nice one it was then we had breakfast afterwards went on the Grand Parade. Toby one of Puck's puppies is a fine little dog & gets admired very much. Paul wrote to tell me not to come yet as he had no decisive answer. I wrote home. We went out for a row to Beachy Head & were out for about 3 hours. In the evening we went out for a walk. It is 10

Eastbourne. Clara's nurse is not well. Did not go out much. Had a letter from Mamma. Wrote back. It is 11.45

20 Monday

Eastbourne. I got up at about 7.30 went out & bather it was high water e only had breakfast at 10 as Clara's having had baby in the night made her late. We walked about on the parade a good deal in the course of the day; we had two or three hard showers. I met Edith's friend on the Parade & therefore not so pleasant for bathing as there were a great many stones and you got out of depth almost directly. walked about with her. It got very fine this evening I have a little toothache. It is 10.45

21 Tuesday

Eastbourne. I was much later today and did not get down till about 9.30 the wind was very strong. Willie & I walked about a good deal on the Parade looking at the waves dashing up as it was very rough. It was a very fine day. We all went for a drive up to Beachy Head where the wind was very strong indeed. We took about 2 hurs to get there and back again. After tea we went on the Parade and at about 7.30 Kim[?] Hardy, Edith's friend came & I went with her and Edith to the rink where we stayed till 9.30. It is 10.45

22 Wednesday

Eastbourne. I did not get down till about 9.40. Clara was already down, soon after breakfast we went out on the Parade as usual and stayed there till about 1.30. I had a letter from Ppa and shall stay here till I have heard from Paul Harding. I wrote to him this afternoon. After dinner we went to see the athletic sports at Devonshire Park it was rather amusing although of course it would have been much more so if I had known the people running. The bycicle [stet] races were rather fun. In the evening we went on to the Parade again as usual. I read a good deal of Barnaby Rudge. It is 10.10

23 Thursday

Eastbourne. I was up at 9 o'clock today Clara & Willie were not much later I read a good deal this morning and went out shopping in the town with Willie. We did not do much in the town this morning. We diend at Mrs Jeakes' Senr, Willie, Edith & I went to the Devonshire Park & ;ooked at the Cricket Rink & :awn Tennis. Had tea at Mrs Jeakes. Went on the Parafe. Had supper there too Miss Hardy, Edith's friend was there also. Saw the eclipse. It is 10.20

24 Friday

Eastbourne. I was up soon after 8. I went to the Pier to enquire about bathing there and was told I could, but as I had no towel etc I did not bathe from there but went to the machines. At about 12 o'clock Willie Clara Edith & myslef went out in a rowing boat we went to the first broken down tower towards Hastings. After dinner we went on the beach & stayed till about 5. After tea we went on the Parade but not for long as it was rather cold. [Bathing Drwaers 5] It is 10.20

25 Saturday

Eastbourne. I meant to have got up before breakfast and bathed from the Pier but as it was very dull weather I did not. In fact it was very rough & windy, Willie & I went up to Splash Point which was a very pretty scene. We went round it I got a little wet. After dinner Edith came and we went to the rink where we saw the Laurence family (2 Girls & 2 boys)(really 3 boys & 1 girl) the skated very well & were quite small childen, Edith & I skated. It has been very wet. It is 10.30

Eastbourne. I was late. Willy & I went to Splash Point in the morning. And on the Parade in the Evening with CLara. It is 10.30

27 Monday

Eastbourne. I was down at about 9.30. Willy & I went shopping and then to th station & found out that Godfrey had most likely come & so he had as we afterwards found out. We went round Splash Point, it is very rough still. We had dinner at about 2 and went to the Devonshire Park. The MCC & DPCC match was on but it was raining so Godfrey & I went on the rink. We met Boosey Waterlow there. We came back at about 5.30 had tea & played at Whist. It was wet nearly all day. It is 20.30.

28 Tuesday

Eastbourne. Godfrey & I went to the Baths which are very large & had a swimming bath. We came back for breakfast at 10. It has cleared up a little Clara Godfrey & I went on the Parade till dinner time then we all went to the Deveonshire Park where Godfrey & Willy played at Lawn tennis. The same cricket match was on as yesterday. After tea which we had at 6 Willy & Godfrey & I went out. I afterwards beat Godfrey at Chess. It is 10.30

29 Wednesday

Eastbourne. Godfrey & I got up at about 8 and went to the Pier where we bathed after breakfast Willy did his shopping & we then went on the sea with him & Clara it was rather rough coming in Clara got rather wet. We had dinner at about 2 as usual and afterwards went to the Park where Godfrey & I played Lawn tennis against Mr Reynolds & Willy we won most of the games Willy was very tired. All this evening Godfrey & I played at Chess & I again beat him & with a good ... ... on the board. It is 10.30

Eastbourne. We bathed off the pier this morning & met Mr Reynolds & Scheffer there at about 11.30 we went to the Park and played at Lawn tennis again we came back at about 2 to dinner but went back again soon afterwards Godfrey & I did not win so many games as yesterday. Boosey Waterlow came here to tea & afterwards we went on the Parade with her. It is 10.40

31 Friday

Eastbourne. Godfrey did not get up so I played off the pier alone I met Mr Reynoldsthere. We had breakfast at about 10 and then went on the Parade where we met Boosey, Miss Stones & one or two other people. In the afternoon we went to the Park and played L.T. till about 6.15 & then came back. After tea that is at about 8.15 Godfrey & I played two games at chess I lost. It is 10.30

1 Sept Saturday

Eastbourne. Godfrey & I went at about 8.30 and bathed off the end of the Pier. The current was very strong, After breakfast & when Willy had done his shopping Godfrey he & I went out in a rowing boat. The sea was rather "chopping". Directly after dinner we all went to the Park and played at lawn tennis till about 6. We then went to Mrs Jeakes where we all had tea & supper. Miss Hardy was also there. It is 10.30

Eastbourne. Bathed as usual. Godfrey & I walked to Baechy Head. I left at 5 for home. Went to Boosey Waterlow's. It is 10.35

3 Monday

Eastbourne. As it was raining this morning I did not bathe but only got up to breakfast at about 9.30. e had a little fine weather at about 12, but is soon began to rain again. I had a letter from Paul Harding to say that Benoit & Co would not take me, so I wrote to Mamma and enclosed the letter. As it rained all the afternoon we did not go out at least only a little. In the evening Willie & I went to the Burlington Hotel. Willie plated Billiard with Reynolds. It is 10.30

4 Tuesday

Eastbourne. I bathed this morning although it was not very bright Reynolds was there, it got brighter later on and we went on the Parade, at about 12 o'clock we went out in a rowing boat it was very nice rather warm in the sun. Willie broke an oar. We had dinner at 2 o'clock and went to the Park soon afterwards where we played at Lawn Tennis till 6 o'clock & then came home to tea. We met Boosey on the Parade & she came in to supper & stayed rather late. It is 11.30

5 Wednesday

Eastbourne to Highgate. I bathed off the pier again this morning Reynolds was there also. I went out shopping with Willie and at about 11.30 we went to the Park where we played Lawn Tennis with Reynolds and one or two others till about 1.15. After dinner we went there again with Clara & Emily STones. Played again but Reynolds was not there. e had tea at 6. I left by the 7.40. CLara gave me 15/- to cover my expenses at Eastbourne. The carriage was full of old women and we were about ½ an hour late at Victoria. I came up here by omnibus & tram arriving here at about 12

Highgate. I had breakfast with Godfrey who is the only one at home. Aunt Ida & family except Alfred are all at& Litlehampton. I wrote to Paul Harding, Benoit's & Amtrichten Reinecke in the morning had lunch here all alone and wrote to Clara in the afternoon. Willie's Coachman brought me up my portmanteau from Victoria. In the evening Alfred dined here and we all went to Nettlefold's & played pool & shellout. It is 12.

7 Friday

Highgate. I could not find any advertisements in the "Times" which I thought worth answering so I went down to Smithfield after having read Arthur's letter which came today. I had lunch at Smithfield afterwhich I went to Rawlins & Theodore's to ask about my going there but they now want me to bind myself for 2 years, so I said I would see about it. I went to dinner at the George Hickson's and enjoyed myself very much. It is 11.-

Highgate. I answered an advertisement in the Times and wrote to Henry Sinnett & Mme Bonet. I began to read Thackeray's History of Pendennis. Had lunch alone Godfrey came back at about 3. He Alfred & I went to Nettlefold's & played Lawn Tennis with Ted. Ted and alfred then came to dinner here. And at about 9 we went to the Alexandra Palace where we saw an aerial dive and the Russians crossing Danube (in fireworks). Came back played Shellout. It is 1.-

Highgate. Read Pendennis, ent to Highbury to dinner at two. Read papers etc after dinner. Sung Hymns after tea went for a walk. Back by tram. It is 10.45

10 Monday

Highgate. After having answered an advertiement from the Times & read a good deal about M Thiers' Funeral in [Paris]. I wrote to M Nioussel & Rico telling former to send me my box & bill. I got a pill for Puck & went to Nettlefolds for his lotion. I found Ted trying to find out how to net a Lawn Tennis net & helped him, we found out after 10 trials that is must be netted thus. 1.2.2.4.4 ie increassing at the beginning & end of every alternate row till large enough then increase & decrease alternatetively at begin of ea. row. Dinner here. Went to Nettle. to Billiards. It is 11.45

11 Tuesday

Fairseat. I had a letter this morning from Aunt Maria asking me to come to Fairseat so I left here at about 11 went down to London. Had dinner at Smithfield, took the 2.38 to Wrotham & walked up here it rained all the way from H[olborn] Viaduct to Wrotham but then left off & I did not get at all wet. Aunt Maria, Paul & Celia, Miss Williams & Muriel Homan are all here. Played at 4 Bezique, I & Paul lost. It is about 10.30

12 Wednesday

Fairseat. It is much finer today. I looked at Paul's Bycicle [stet] and saw him ride, he very much wanted me to try but I was afraid I could not get on & off however after dinner I tried & got on very farely. Uncle Sidney & Uncle George came here this afternoon. I went out for a walk with them before dinner. After dinner we played Whist, Uncle Sidney & I against Uncle George & Aunt Maria. We lost every game. Were rather later than usual. 11.30

Fairseat. I slept with Paul as yesterday night. In the morning he was not quite well had a slight attack of Asthma so I went down to Dr Kent at Wrotham for some medicine caught the trap coming back that had taken Uncle Sidney to the station. Was not fine all day. Aunt Uncle George & I drove out for a long way in the afternoon. We played at Whist again after dinner. 10.30

14 Friday

Fairseat. It was much finer all day today. Uncle george left this morning for London Paul & I did a good del of Bycicling we went to the Vigo & back he in 5½ minutes, I in 8. His Bycicle is rather small for me however I can rise it we played several games of chess. I beat all easily. After dinner we again played at Whist. 10.30

15 Saturday

Fairseat. It looked very rainy all day today however it did not rain & we had some more races to the Vigo & back. Paul did it in 6, I in 7 minutes. This afternoon we went to Wrotham to meet Uncle. Paul rode down & I in the carriage & I rode up from Wrotham. Charley & David came down from London on their Bycicle. I went for a walk with Uncle. Played chess with David. About 10.30

Fairseat. Went for a walk with all but Miss Williams & for a drive in the afternoon, Paul & I took turns on his Bycicle. David & Charley left.

17 Monday

Highgate. Paul & I looked at the Bycicle this morning found the handle bent so I took it to Stansted & had it bent straight. At about 12.45 I left on the Bycicle. The rest went in the carriage. I took a wrong turning before the London road & so got far behind & did not catch them up till Farmingham. Paul rode to Foots Cary there we rested. I rode to Eltham & he to Lewisham Road. I took the By. by rail to Bartholomews had dinner there then came home by train. 11.30

18 Tuesday

Highgate. Mamma told me a geat deal of her history and I answered one advertisement in the Times. Aunt Ida & Clarchen came here this morning. I went and had lunch at the John Hill's & stayed there till about 4. Maggie has fetched Nelly & B. Durham who are to stay a week. papa has seen M Seligmann who says he can make room for me in his place. 11.-

19 Wednesday

Highgate. I took down the dining room blind and put new cords in & then put it up again. Clara came in this morning. I went to Aunt Ida's & then to Smithfield where I had lunch. Papa & I then went to M Selimann who offered to take me but says I might have a better chance of a future at Rawlins' as he (Seligmann) cannot give me an opening but Rawlins might want a man of trust. I sent M Nioussel a cheque for his bill. Gve Papa back £10 for Journey to Paris (Mama 5 Godfrey 5). Played at chess with Papa 11.-

Highgate. We decided this morning that I should accept M Seligmann's offer so I wrote to him saying it was not very fine all day. I read the beginning of Ricardo's Political Economy. After dinner I went to Aunt Ida's and stayed there for a couple of hours & the came home. After dinner I had two games at chess with Godfrey & won both games. 11.-

21 Friday

Highgate. I read the Times nearly all through & then at about 11 I went & had 2 games at Lawn Tennis with John. He beat both games I came back at 1 had lunch & then went to the Alexandra Palace with Nelly & B Durham. We saw the Nubian caravan a horse race had a swing etc. we got back here at about 5. After dinner Godfrey bet me 2 games at chess I ought to have beaton last. 11.

22 Saturday

Highgate. I read the Times through went down the Hill for Mamma & went to Miss Grant's. When I came back I went to Aunt Ida's & had a 4 game at L Tennis with Herbert Sidney & Cowley. Sidney & I won. Aftr lunch Mrs & 2 little Durhams came & 3 little Girl Nettlefold's. Maggie & I amused them a sbesy could in Jeakes Garden. This evening after Mrs Durham had gone. I read a good deal of Pendennis. Rather tired. 10.

We had breakfast at 8.15 I left here at about 8.35 took the 8.54 train to Moorgate Street, went first to Lebeau's Billites ST and then to Mr Seligmann's. I had a lot of books to number and different little things to do. M.S. asked me what I had been doing in Paris and then said he would tell me what I should have to do but did not do so. Wrote ro Rawlins to refuse. Came home by 6.37. It is 10.20

25 Tuesday

We breakfasted as usual. Godfrey was not there as he went to Dan at Brighton yesterday to stay a week I went by the 9.2 from Highgate to Broad Street. Had more to do today at business. I went to Theodor & Rawlins on business. Lunched at Crosly Hall where Fred Hickson lunches. cheap & good. Came back by 6.48 M Johnston, Col Stedall Willie & Clara had dinner here they had not finished when I came home. They played 4 billiards, 2 games each. It is 11.45

26 Wednesday

We were rather later this morning I went by the 9.2 to Broad Street. At Highgate I filled out an Order sheet for a Season ticket but was told I must hand it in at Kings Cross & pay there too. Mearly all the fellows were there when I got there at about 9.40. The Dutchman came back today but not to business. I did about the same as yesterday but had more to do. Went to Kings X handed in order but was told it was too late to pay for ticket must send cheque. Came on by 7.25 from Kings X. We all ahd supper together. I lunched at Crosby Hall as yesterday. It is 10.35

I began breakfast alone as noone was down. Asked Papa to send a cheque for my season ticket & paid him for it. He gave me £2. I went by the 8.54 from Upper Holloway. There was an intense fogg & se were 10 minutes late. The Dutchman M Rees came to business today & sp I now have really no place. I lunched at Crosby Hall. Did not have nearly as much to do as O should like. Smelt a good many teas, tasted one. Came back by 7.19. It is 10.50

28 Friday

I went to business by the 8.54 from Upper Holloway our train was not quite so late as yesterday & I was first in the Tea Room. I had a very little to do all day Smelt a good many teas & tested two or three. I went out to 3 or 4 brokers etc. I went to Smithfield to lunch but find it is rather sharp work in an hour. Came home by the 7.19. All had supper together. I read a little of Pendennis & am going to take a bath. It is 10.10

29 Saturday

I caught the same train as yesterday which was about 7 minutes late here & about ¼ of an hour at Moorgate Street. I did not have at all much to do today I weighed out several teas for tasting and went out several times to brokers etc. M Seligmann wants me to stop with Morxley so I ought to have left early today only I stayed as Cutter particularly wanted to go today. I came home by the 6.37. Had three games at Billiards with Papa who of course won. It is 11.15

I was rather later today but in plenty of time. Although I did not expect to I got my season ticket this morning & as I need only give 5/- deposit they returned me 5/-. My train was 20 minutes late. I was rather busier at business. I met Fred as arranged & lunched with him at Crosby Hall (sit-down). I went to Mrs Durhams at 7. milk & sugar for tea, dined there saw the Welsh photo's & he & papa had taken & went to a congezatione at Guys. Was taken faint. It is 12.

2 Tuesday

I cought the 8.58 instead of 9.2 but was about 10 minutes late at Broad Street. I have had a job all day that will still take some time so I am more occupied, I lunched at a new place in Fenchurch St. called I think Kings Head (or something of the kind). Meant to catch 7.18 but it is taken off so I had to wait for a tremendous time from there to Crouchend as an Engne broke on the line got home at about 8.45 Harry & 2 babies have come. It is 11.30

3 Wednesday

I took my usual the 9.2 train & got to office about 9.35. I did much about the same as yesterday ie. making out new tickets for cannisters etc. I had lunch at Crosby Hall with Fred. Papa gave me 10/- as birthday presnt. Came home by the 7.- from Moorgate Street. I read a little of Don Carlos. Had a game of billiards with Godfrey who won.

I caught the 9,2 train & nearly got into a wrong train at Finsbury Park my train was as usual 10 minutes late. I was not very busy all day. I met Fred at Crosby Hall where we lunched. I meant to have met Fred at at 7 at Moorgate Street but missed my train & came by the 7.8 to Holloway & on by tram. Fred & I had supper. Then our reading party began consisting of May Annie & Fred, Florence Pike, Connie & Francy Nettlefold (who brought a friend) & our four selves. 11.20

5 Friday

I went by the same train it was about 5 minutes late but I was one of the first at the sale room, I lunched with Fred at Crosby Hall we went first to The Palmerston but we did not think it looked suitable. This afternoon M Seligmann told me that after tomorrow I am to go upstairs. This evening I went to Highbury to elocution class which went off very well. 12.

6 Saturday

The 8.58 train did not come in at Highgate till about 9.6 and as there was something the matter with the engine we missed the 9.9 at Finsbury Park and were about 25 minutes late. I had nothing particular to do. Left at 2. Had lunch (stand up) at Crosby Hall and caught the 2.15. Had 2 games at Lawn tennis with Mary Anne Jeakes & one with Maggie. Mamma & Papa 25th Wedding anniversary. Dan Fanny Ann Mary Willie Clara Mary Anne Edith Charly & Louie Harry, Mama Papa Godfrey Maggie & I dined togaher 11.50

I took the 8.58 train & went to Broadstreet out train is not so late now as it was the beginning of last week. I went up into the office today I put some letters away which I sorted from others etc. I lunched at Smithfield and am going to do so all the week. I came home by the 7 o'clock from Moorgate Street. We all had supper together. Alfred was here we played at Pool. After some time Harry & Papa joined us. I lost. 11.55.

9 Tuesday

I had a very bad headache this morning which lasted more or less all day. At business I was one of the first. I had two German letters to copy and a few other things to do. I lunched at Smithfield. I think I shall be able to go there every day. I came home by the 7 o'clock. Papa & Harry are out I read over some of Don Carlos for Thursday. It is 9.55

I went by the same train as usual had nothing particular to do. Alfred was here to supper & we played pool. 12.

I went by my usual train and did not have anything particular to do. I mean to say nothing that any other young fellow on entering an office would not have. I came back by the 7.- Ftancy & Connie Nettlefold F Pike & ourselves were all that constituted our German meeting we read up to the end of the 3rd act of Don Carlos & then played Pool with Alfred & Papa. It is 12.-

All the day was spent about the same as usual. I lunched at Smithfield as I have done all this week. M Seligmann gave me some letters to copy just when I was going away so I was later than usual shich did not matter as I had arranged to meet Fred at Broadstreet at 7.15, which train I also caught. I said Anthony's speach of Caesar's body. The evening was very satisfactory. It is 11.10

13 Saturday

I took the 9.2 which was late we missed the Broadstreet train & had to wait some time. I came back by the 2.7 from Broadstreet changed at Finsbury Park and got in the same train as Papa. Had 4 sets with Papa against Willie & Fred each won two Francy Connie & Hugh came here to dinner. We played love-pool which was rather humbug as nobody seemed to care for it. 12.10

Went for a walk in the morning. Dan & Fanny came with Arthur. We played L Tennis at Aunt Ida's in afternoon. 11.0

I went to town as usual & had the same things to do i.e. odds & ends. I dined at Smithfield. Came home by train. Read several Ingolsby Legends etc.

I went to the city as usual & came back as usual. They were all out but Maggie we read through a lot of plays for acting at the G Hicksons 11.0

17 Wednesday

All th business part of the day went off as usual. I had some bills to make out etc. I read 2 or three farces through but think I like "Who speaks first" best. I came home with Fred we had our German reading. Francy & Connie Annie Pike, Annie May & Fred Hickson and our 4 selves. We did not quite finish Don Carlos. George Hickson's went at 10. Others stayed till 11. We are to read Egmont next. It is 11.45

I took the 8.58 from here, the N London 9.9 did not come to Finsbury at all and I got into the N L 9.16 from Highgate and was just ½ an hour late the fog was very dense. M Seligmann left early and so did nearly all. I came home by the 6.32 from Broad Street. Maria King was here. I read the Lady of Lyons & like it very much. 11.20

19 Friday

Owing to the intense fog our train was again about ¼ of an hour late. At business every thing went on much as usual. M Seliigmann left a little earlier. I took the 7 from Broadstreet & went to Uncle Georges to the elocution class, all members were present I read Lady Rohesia from Ingoldsby legends. We have now decided on acting the Lady of Lyons & shall most likely also act Who speaks first. 11.30

20 Saturday

We were only a little late this morning. I booked the post and got 2 or 3 good stamps. M Seligmann left at about 3 and I took the 5.17 from Broadstreet. Mrs Henry Stedall was here to tea and Mr Henry came a little later. We had two games at Pool. I won the whole of the first pool and all but halved the last. It is 11.10

Went to church with Harry. Noone came to dinner. Dr, Mrs & Master Williamson called. It is 11.10

Everything went on as usual today at business. I am getting into more regular work. I had dinner as usual at Smithfield paid for last week I met Fred at 7 in Moorgate ... as it was our German Meeting. We read Egno...[ed?] I took Egmont same members as last time plus Clarchen. It is 11.35. Godfrey has got us a copy of the Lady of Lyons

23 Tuesday

At business I had rather more to do than I have hitherto had. I got rather wet coming from dinner, from Smithfield, as it rained very hard. It rained nearly all day but towards the evening it cleared up. I learned some of the Lady of Lyons coming home. I read "some Conversations with M Thiers" from the Fortnightly & had a game at chess with Godfrey which he ultimately won it lasted some time. It is 11

Business went on as usual I am gradually getting more & more to do. I had dinner as usual. Mamma & Papa went out this evening. I wrote to Mrs Harding. Read some of Egmont. Had a bath. 11.

I went to town as usual there was a very heavy rainy mist up here which was quite fine rain to town, it rained very nearly all day. I met Henry Hill going to & coming from Dinner. I came back by the 7 o'clock train, I came across the fields but it was very muddy. It is 11.20

I went to town as usual. I had a good deal to do today as one of the fellows (Acton) is ill. I had dinner as usual Mr Seligmann was only there in the morning. I took the 7 o'clock train & went to Highbury. Where we finished As you like it and read Lady of Lyons through as no one knew their parts. Came homemby tram. Mamma says Mr Nettlefold is not expected to live more than a few days at the most. It is 11.30

I had a good deal to do in town quite enough for Saturday morning. I left at about ¼ to 2 went to dinner at Smithfield and came home. It was pouring hard when I got to Highgate. Dan came up & played with Papa. Willy Alfrd Godfrey & I played next door till six. Miss Nimo has come & is to stay till Monday. After dinner I had a game at billiards with Godfrey, Dan helping me. Godfrey won. We hear Mr Nettlefold is about the same. It is 11.25

Mr Seligmann called me this evening & told me I had not done the advises properly etc. Had 2 games of chess with Godfrey won both. Boxed with him. 11.15. Mr Nettlefold about the same.

as rather busy at Business today. Came home by the 7.8 to Holloway & walked got home at 8. Mr Nettlefold is rather better. It is 18.40. Had a game at chess with Godfrey who won.

I went to business as usual. I have at last got a place in the office. I had a good deal to do. I had dinner at Smithfield. Papa gave me £4. I went to Bedford St Stores & was measured for a coat & vest, paid for them Came home by the 7. Mr Seligmann left early. Mr Netlefold is rather better has had sleep. 11.-

As Mr Seligmann is living at Brighton now I got away from Business pretty early. Miss Noly was not at our elocution class. One or two pieces of poetry etc were said & then we rehearsed the first 3 acts of the Lady of Lyons. About 11.-

I got away at about 3.40 and came home first & then went next door. Mamma & Papa have gone to Fairseat. We played Billiards. About 11.

Godfrey & I went to see how Mr Nettlefold was, he is a little better. We all went to Aunt Ida's in the evening. 11.

I had to run to catch my train this morning. M Seligmann stopped till very late today. I had my hair cut at a little past 7 caught the 7.42 from Broadstreet which missed the G N train at Finsbury So I did not get home till ¼ to 9. Mama & Papa have come home. My head hurtss a good deal. 10.0

6 Tuesday

I had a great deal to do at Business today as one of the fellows is missing. Mr Seligmann went away rather earlier and I caught the 7 o'clock train. I had two games of billiards with Godfrey who won both. It is 11.15

7 Wednesday

I got to business as usual at about 29 to 10. I had a great deal to do. Dined as usual at Smithfield paid for last week Mr Seligmann stayed till very late & I only just caught the 7.35 from Moorgate Street. 10.30

Nothing particular occurred. I left business rather late as there was a stray[?] mail. I copied a vulgar boy. 11.-

Business went on Pretty well as usual Mr Seligmann did come although he said he should not. I saw the Lord Mayor's show. Got away rather early, fetch Fred & went to Highbury. I said the Vulgar Boy we rehearsed a little of the Lady of Lyons & decided on doing a Blighted Being. I am to be the waiter. 11.

Got away from business at two had lunch at Smithfields. Came home went to Jeakes beat CLara about 6 games of chess she beat one game. 11.15

It has been very fine today. Business went on as usual. Mr Seligmann left early. I left at ¼ to 7 meaning to catch the 7 train but took it so easily that I missed it. 11 o'clock

In business everything was much as usual. I had a good deal to do. I meant to catch th 7 o'clock train ran all the way but missed it & took the 7.8 to Holloway and on by tram

Annie & Florence Pike, May, Annie & Fred Hickson & Connie & Francy Nettlefold were here we began Götz v. Berlichingen. 11.15

It was very cold today. I went to the stores & tried on my coat. I came home by the 7.42 Mamma & Papa were out I beat Godfrey 2 games of chess. 11.-

I took the 9.2 train which being late missed the North Islington train. I took a Gt Northern and did not get to business till 10.- Mr Seligmann left early but as Moxley was such a slow coach I missed the 7 train. I had two games at chess with Father who beat me as usual. It is 10.55

16 Friday

Business went on as usual. Mr Seligmann said he should not come if it were fine but he did come & left at about 2. I got away about 6.15. We did not have a Highbury elocution class today. Godfrey beat me a game of chess after a great deal of pain. 11.

17 Saturday

I took my dress clothes to town, where I arrived ½ an hour late as there was an intense fog. Mr Seligmann left at about 4 & I caught the 5.38 from Broad Street and found a large ea party here. Aunt Ida, Fanny, Clara, Willy, Aunt AMry, Dan, Mary Anne & Edith. Mary-Anne, Maie, Godfrey & I went in Aunt Ida's carriage with Alfred & Clarchen (we took Aunt Mary to St John Park) to Uncle George's to a small evening party. I enjoyed myself verey much & danced with Percy, Nelly, Emily Stones, (the Cotillon with) Annie, Clarchen, Jessie Waterlow & Mary Annie Jeakes. 1.0

Did not go anywhere except in next door for a short time. Dan & Fanny came to dinner, Charly came in the morning. 10.50

All my business went on as usual. I went to Highbury & reheared a blighted Being with M Webb, May & Fred & then walked home.

20 Tuesday

Business as usual. Came home with Fred by the 7. all members present. Finished Gotz v. Berlichinger. Papa has been to the Institution saw Mr Brooke who is engaged. He also says he can emply me as foreign correspondent. 11.20

21 Wednesday

Business went on much as usual. I had not quite so much to do as I have had lately. Papa went & saw Mr Arthur Brooke about my going there. He says I should have a little correspondence & book keeping etc. Mr Brooke said yesterday I should begin with £100 a year. Papa is going to see Mr Seligmann tomorrow. 11.-

At business everything went on as usual. Papa came in the afternoon and saw Mr Seligmann. He thinks Mr S did not quite like his taking me away Mr S said he knew several young me[n] who had gone to China & done so very well in the tea trade. This evening I heard Miss Glyn read The Merchant of Venice. 11.-

Mr Seligmann did not come up from Brighton today. Papa saw Mr Brooke who says that I should have a fair propsect of getting on. & I should be able to get into the laboratory or works. Godfrey beat me a game of chess today after playing 2 hours. 10.45

24 Saturday

I went to business as usual and left at two as it was my early Saturday. I lunched at Smithfield and then came home. It was very wet. Cliply has come to stay here till Monday. Louie had a little boy a day or two ago. 11.15

Went to church, Dan & Fanny came to dinner. Godfrey & I went to Clara & to Aunt Ida's for a short time. 11.-

I took the 8.46 train today but as there was a dense fog I did not get to town till ½ past nine. Father saw Mr Brooke and has settled that I am to go there after Christmas. He saw Mr Seligmann who is he thinks rather annoyed at my leaving. 10.45

Business went on as usual I did not see Mr Selimann or else I should have spoken to him about my leaving. It rained very hard this evening and only Francie, Connie & Florence Pike were here we read the first 2 acts of the Räuber. 11.15

28 Wednesday

I took the 8.48 my usual train and was nearly the first in the office. As Mr Seligmann left early I had no chance of speaking to him about my leaving. I came home by the 6.13 from Broad Street. Papa beat me a game of chess and Godfrey a game of billiards. 11.-

Business went on as usual I did not see Mr Seligmann to speak to. He stayed till past 7 and I came home by the 7.35. I went to the Institution & heard Miss Glyn read Macbeth. 11.-

Mr Seligmann had told us yesterday he should not come if it was fine. It was fine but as Mr Emil S telegraphed to him he came at about 3 till 6. I caught the 7 o'clock & went to Highbury we rehearsed a part of the Lady of Lyons & Sidney & Magggie recited. 11.25

1 December Saturday

I went to business as usual. Had dinner at Smithfield & as it was my late Saturday I went back to business. I came home by the 6.13 train. Mr & Mrs Durham, Dan & Charley Waterlow were here & Harry came after dinner. First two or three games of billiards were played and then we all played shell out, I lost. 12.-

Godfrey & I went to Louies & saw her baby. In the afternoon we called on Nettlefold's, Pike's & Clara & I went to Aunt Ida's. It is 11.-

Everything in town went on as usual. I asked Mr Martin the cashier whether Mr Seligmann had spoken to him about my salary & he said no. So I asked to say nothing about it yet. I beat Godfrey a game of chess in which he had the best nearly all thro' 10.40

When I came back from twn I went up to the institution but as there is no reading (Shakespeare) I went home again. There Mamma told me little Maud was very badly ill with Scarley fever & Ida, Fanny, Clarchen & Alfred were coming to Tweed[?] so Godfrey & I had to sleep out & went to Willies where we slept.

After business I came here to the Class. I heard Maud is very ill indeed. Mamma has sent my things here so I have stopped here.

As I only got this book today the 19 Dec I shall not be able to give an account of every days preceeding

Today Maud was very much worse.

Went to the bazaar at Finchley with Uncle Sidney, Charley & David. Charley came here afterwrads. Played cards.

9 Sunday

I went to South Place Chapel today. In the evening Nelly & I went to Clara. Maud is as bad as can be, but very little hope.

Mr Heuer came in this morning and said poor little Maud had died last night at about 10 o'clock Aunt Ida is as well as can be expected, but very knocked up.

This evening was Clara's party which could not be put off so late I & Fred went from here. I enjoyed myself very much & danced with Miss Alders Ethel Ellis (twice) Miss Huggins Miss Bodkin (2) Marian Stones (2) Miss Hath (2) E Jeakes (2) Miss Gruber, Emily Stones, Mary King Jessie waterlow (2) Eva W. Both Mr Edward & Emil Seligmann were there. We did not get home till 4 o'clock

I went to Highgate today they are all well there. Aunt Ida is at Aunt Mary's, but her children at Tweed. Godfrey has gone home again. Maggie is to go home on Saturday, Aunt Ida who was to have gone to Dover with the children will not go very likely till after Christmas, but will go to our house.

The fog was very dense this morning. This afternoon I spoke to Nr Seligmann about next week and told him I would stay till the end of the year. I came home by the 6.15 and went with Uncle nelly & Annie to the Liberal Social Union Party at the Cannon Street Hotel. I danced twice with Annie three times with nelly & once with Miss Akroyd of Preston, F Preston MacMoren, Stevens Young somebody in White & Red & a german lady. Once I sat out. We got home at about 1, all having amused ourselves very much, & very tired.

21 Friday

I caught my usual train but it was again late as it was again foggy. I went to Somerset House with Acton, Changed a ten franc piece I have had ever since I left Paris on our way, had some refreshment & went back by train. Mr Seligmann left soon after 6 & I tried to catch the seven o'clock from Broad St but was too late, & owing to some accident no Chalk farm trains came in & I had to go by the 7.42. Dan & I changed stamps.

22 Saturday

Went to busines as usual, Got away at two. Had lunch at Crosby Hall & took the 2.42 as for some reason or other the 2.32 did not come. I went to Highbury stayed there till after tea (about 5) & came up here to Clara's by train. I was very sorry to leave Highbury as I had enjoyed myself very much there, & Clara is evidently offended that I did not come before. She never answered my letter & on the whole she seemed quite cross about my not having come before. Why did not she write first?

Horace, Godfrey & I walked over to Harry's, Godfrey is staying here at Clara's, Went to Tweed for a little while.

24 Monday

Godfrey & Willy went to some rink where they played Lawn Tennis with Dan I went to town by the 8.49. Had lunch at Smithfield paid for two weeks dinner Got 3 Christmas cards & sent them to Nelly, Annie & May. Went to the stores and got a necktie as well as some collars. Came home by the 4.53. Went into Tweed a little while after dinner.

25 Tuesday

We got down at about 9.40 after breakfast we went to Tweed where we (Godfrey & I) stayed till after dinner which we had there at 2.30 we then came back here & had another dinner which pretty well settled us. We them all played at Whist till rather late.

26 Wednesday

After breakfast which we had at about the same time as yesterday we went into Tweed and played shell out I lost 2/11. We came back here to 1.30 dinner. Harry came also. After dinner I went to Highbury fro about an hour. I got back at about 5.30 and had tea Kate & Percy were here to tea but went soon afterwards. We first played billiards till supper & I then played at chess with CLara & beat two games. Mary-Anne has gone out. Mr Nettlefold is very bad again Mr Oakshott was there all last night.

I was rather late at business as no one was down here (Winchester) to give me my breakfast & I did not get away till about 7. o'clock I went back to CLara's Papa & Maggie were there Aunt Ida & family have gone down to Folkestoe with Mama. It has been freezing ever since yesterday night.

28 Friday

Chomeley Park. I was again rather late for the same reason but not so much. At about 11 o'clock I went to Mrs Brooks & asked for Mr Arthur B. but he was not at home & so I saw Mr Simpson who seems very nice indeed. Mr Marton told me Mr Seligmann had spoken to him about my salary so I setled with him. I had supper at Clara's but came home directly after. It snowed hard this evening but is raining now.

29 Saturday

I went to Rood Lane by the 9.2 as usual which was rather late. I ordered the renewal of my season ticket. I said Good Bye to Mr Seligmann today. I met Mamma at 8 at Charing Cross & came home with her. Am rather tired.

I went into Fairseat House today, George has lost his little girl & so their theatre calls will be pt off. Dan came up this afternoon.

I went to Brooke Simpson & Spillers Office at 50 Old Broad St. this morning as arranged last Friday. I got there exactly at 9.30 & no one else was there but they soon came.

I had three French letters to translate & two to write. I shall have to keep one or two books, Stock lists etc., but shall not have much to do just yet perhaps not for 2 or 3 weeks. I left at about 5.15 that is the usual time. Nelly Hickson was here when I came home. She stayed to dinner & I took her to the station soon afterwards. Coming home I was measured & weighed. I weigh 9 stone 1 lb & am 5 feet 8⅜ in high.

Last year 23/12/76 I weighed 9 stone 0.8oz & was 5 feet 8⅝ in high.

& 23/12/75 I weighed 9 stone 2.5oz & am 5 feet 8⅜ in high.
