March 3rd. What do you think of Germany's preparations. France and Belgium are doing what they can but dear blind old Britain can see no need to do anything more than talk of the sinfulness and waste of war, of the approach of the Millennium and of the love and trust we ought to show other nations, especially Germany. I should like to see every able-bodied man in this Country (irrespective of age) drilled and trained to shoot straight, provided with up to date weapons and all the necessaries. We should no longer have to fear invasion and could send our fleet away from our shores. (The Great European War began August, 1914).
